Sr Mechanical Design Engineer

At Resideo, we imagine a world where homes and buildings are good for the planet, and where technology works to simplify everyday life. In that world, people are healthy, happy, and secure. To help create this future, we will work every day to simplify the connected world so people have peace of mind and can focus on what matters most.

Resideo is making a large investment in our engineering group. With global reach and impact, we are dedicated to an investment in building our team as we develop new products and introduce them to consumers around the world (NPI). Whether your expertise is centered in mechanical, hardware, electrical, firmware, software, embedded, connected, test or other functional areas of embedded connected products, we have a place on our team ready for you to establish and grow your career. Being an established leader in the connected products space, we will give you a platform to work on new and innovative projects as a member of a team of intelligent innovators that are developing products that truly align with our mission of protecting what matters most.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with expertise in Mechanical FEA simulations, smoke sensor development and strong proficiency in smoke and airflow simulation. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and optimization of virtual mechanical design testing, smoke sensor enclosures and airflow systems. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance smoke sensor solutions that meet the stringent requirements of our customers.

Job Duties:

Perform Mechanical FEA Simulations (i.e.. Drop Testing, Battery Contact Bend Constraints, Plastic Snap Fits, and other mechanical testing).  Lead the design and development of various Resideo products including smoke sensor enclosures and airflow systems, ensuring optimal performance in detecting smoke particles and minimizing false alarms. Conduct smoke and airflow simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to analyze and optimize sensor enclosure designs for efficient smoke detection and airflow patterns. Collaborate with electronics engineers to integrate sensor components into the mechanical design, optimizing placement and alignment for maximum sensitivity and reliability. Perform thermal analysis and heat dissipation studies to ensure proper operation of sensor components under various environmental conditions. Design and prototype sensor enclosures using CAD software, considering factors such as material selection, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. Conduct testing and validation of sensor enclosures and airflow systems, analyzing performance metrics and addressing any issues or deficiencies through iterative refinement and optimization. Drive innovation in smoke sensor technology through research, experimentation, and evaluation of emerging technologies and industry trends.

Must Have:

5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on product development and smoke sensor design. Strong proficiency in smoke and airflow simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software such as ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL Multiphysics, or similar. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, or Creo for 3D modeling and design. Proficiency in 2D drawings, critical-to-function dimensions, and tolerance stacks. Deep understanding of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics principles as they apply to smoke sensor design and airflow analysis. Experience with enclosure designs and manufacturability techniques for mechanical components in confined spaces. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and optimize performance for efficiency and reliability. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

What’s In It for You:

Work in a Hybrid setting (3 days in office, 2 days remote) Enjoy work-life balance with generous vacation time that can be scheduled with manager approval based on business priorities and personal needs, without pre-set maximums. Immediate eligibility for Medical, Dental, Vision insurance and 401K.

If you are a seasoned mechanical engineer with a passion for smoke sensor development and expertise in smoke and airflow simulation, we want to hear from you! Join us in our mission to develop innovative smoke sensor solutions that enhance fire safety and save lives. Apply now to become a part of our dedicated team at Resideo.
