Job Description
 

An opportunity is available in the Corporate Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Department as we continue to assemble a world-class EH&S team at Gilead to support growth in operational footprint and global headcount.

The EH&S function is expanding its Corporate EH&S team to ensure compliance and pursue a proactive EH&S culture via execution of various initiatives associated with pursuit of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification at our headquarters in Foster City and Gilead sites globally.  

We are looking for a Corporate EH&S Senior Manager - Industrial Hygiene & Information Management to join a highly motivated and cross-functional team. In this role, you’ll help design the development and oversight of corporate industrial hygiene standards, ensuring alignment with site-level programs that promote employee health and well-being. To thrive in this position, you must be an independent initiative-taker with excellent analysis, multitasking, and critical thinking skills from straightforward issues to complex situations.

You will be a subject matter expert in Industrial Hygiene with demonstrated experience in information and document management and eager to learn and support other areas of the team when needed. This individual must possess great interpersonal capabilities that facilitate the explanation of complex topics straightforwardly to educate and influence management, colleagues, and customers to ensure the successful implementation of EH&S programs and directives as assigned. 

General Responsibilities

The EH&S Senior Manager – Industrial Hygiene & Information Management will serve as an agent of change within their areas of responsibility while effectively ensuring compliance and proliferation of best practices throughout customer organizations. 

Identify, document, and resolve potential gaps in EH&S programs.

Establish a positive rapport with staff, scientists, and management to ensure an elevated level of customer service and serve as a primary point of contact for customer groups.

Assist with implementing general elements of Global EH&S Programs across Gilead, as defined by local, state, and federal agencies.

Mentor and develop junior EH&S professionals and promote a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.


Essential Duties and Job Functions

Located on-site at the Gilead Foster City campus, the specific responsibilities for this role focus on  development and management of Corporate Industrial Hygiene and Information Management standards, programs, and methods associated with EH&S functions for all locations where Gilead operates to ensure regulatory compliance and pursue cultivation of a strong EH&S Management system culture aligned with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.

This role requires execution of professional and developmental goals with minimal supervision and independent management. Although based in Foster City, this role may occasionally require international and national travel.

This role may support hybrid work opportunities (1-2 days/week remote). This role will focus on direct contributions to EH&S program development and management. The successful candidate will develop, document, and execute Corporate EH&S Standards and Programs in the following areas which apply across all global Gilead locations: 

Industrial Hygiene

Design and execute exposure assessment strategies in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing settings, with a focus on highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Evaluate and control occupational exposure risks using a variety of assessment and mitigation techniques, including:
  - Chemical and biological agent monitoring
  - Noise and heat stress evaluations
  - Radiation safety (ionizing and non-ionizing)
  - Ventilation and containment systems
  - Exposure modeling and risk analysis.

Collaborate with site based EH&S teams to develop methods for operational evaluations to ensure EH&S compliance at all Gilead and its partners as determined appropriate.

Information and Document Management

Oversee Corporate EH&S Data Analytics and associated applications for analysis and presentation, such as dashboarding of EH&S metrics using tools such as Microsoft Power BI.

Create, manage, publish EH&S metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Create data summaries in support of external Environmental and Social Governance (ESG), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and other compliance reporting requirements.

Modernize and manage Corporate EH&S document library, including authoring standards, templates and procedures that support methods for version control consistent with ISO standards.

Develop and manage Gilead Corporate internal EH&S website.

Experience with enterprise databases such as VeevaVault and CorityOne software is highly favored, but not required.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Biology/Environmental Sciences with 8+ years progressive relevant experience in EH&S and industry, or a master’s degree and minimum 6 years of relevant experience.

Working knowledge of all relevant OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, DOT, and NFPA regulatory requirements.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated experience in interacting with regulatory agencies.

Demonstrated experience working in collaborative teams.

Demonstrated experience working under minimal supervision.

Demonstrated success with leading and influencing without authority.

Anticipate needs and problems while creating and implementing solutions.

The ability to effectively shift priorities on short notice and work at a rapid pace.

Relevant experience may supersede degree requirements.

Experience Preferred

Managing and conducting EH&S corporate and site audits

Use and/or management of EH&S Management Software (e.g., CorityOne, SpheraCloud, Enablon)

Proven effectiveness at improving processes to increase efficiency and customer service.

Knowledge and Skills Preferred

Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Professional Certification preferred.

Experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industry

The salary range for this position is: $157,590.00 - $203,940.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
