About the Role

As a Senior Data Engineer I, you will play a key role in designing and developing big data applications and pipelines. You will work closely with our team to contribute to the development of data products and capabilities within our core data domain—responsible for managing the vital data that feeds into Elsevier’s products and services. This role offers an excellent opportunity to grow your expertise while making a meaningful impact.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to understand complex data requirements and help design effective solutions. Contribute to all phases of the data development lifecycle, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and secure data pipelines and applications. Assist in implementing best practices for data modeling, processing, and storage within our modern big data stack. Support the deployment and maintenance of data solutions on cloud platforms, primarily AWS, including storage, processing, and messaging services. Help identify opportunities for process improvements and assist in implementing new technologies or methodologies. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, performing root cause analysis to ensure long-term stability. Share knowledge and collaborate with team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. 

Requirements

Experience with data engineering principles, data architecture, and modern data stack components (e.g., data lakes, data mesh, streaming data). Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Scala or Python, and experience with distributed data processing frameworks like Spark or Delta Lake. Familiarity with databases (SQL and NoSQL), search engines (Solr, Elasticsearch), and data services. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, especially AWS (S3, EMR, Athena, Glue, SQS), and deploying infrastructure using IaC tools. Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and automation tools like Jenkins. Experience with orchestration frameworks such as Airflow or event streaming systems like Kafka. Understanding of Agile or Kanban development methodologies.
