PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As a Safety Specialist – Engineering, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping a safety-first culture across CPKC’s Engineering Operations. This is more than a compliance role — it’s an opportunity to lead strategic safety initiatives, influence operational excellence, and collaborate across borders to ensure our teams work smarter and safer. Your expertise will help us meet regulatory standards, reduce risk, and continuously improve how we protect our people and our infrastructure.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Serve as a subject matter expert on safety rules, procedures, and standards within Engineering Operations Develop and implement annual functional safety plans Monitor safety performance and conduct audits and inspections across Canada and the U.S. Lead or participate in field safety activities and investigations Recommend and implement improvements to safety practices throughout the year Provide leadership in incident investigations and root cause analysis Represent CPKC in meetings with external regulators (e.g., Transport Canada, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) , Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)). Support and guide safety committees and advisory boards to ensure regulatory compliance
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma with a preference for Post-secondary education in a safety-related field or equivalent experience 3 years of experience in railroad operations or a related field, with a preference for 3 years of safety experience and a strong background in Engineering Operations Proficient with safety platforms and various computer programs. Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. safety regulations and programs. Willingness to work flexible, non-traditional hours and in extreme weather conditions. Valid passport and ability to travel internationally

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
