Special Materials Machinist

CEIS | Clover Leaf Solutions is seeking highly skilled and safety-conscious Special Materials Machinists to support precision manufacturing efforts within the Pit Technologies (PT) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). These roles directly support the U.S. nuclear stockpile mission by delivering precision-machined components made from plutonium, uranium, beryllium, and other hazardous materials under rigorous environmental and security controls.

As a Special Materials Machinist, you will contribute to a highly technical team responsible for manufacturing prototype and production parts inside glovebox and controlled-area environments. Depending on level, you may either execute complex machining tasks with independence or lead technical initiatives, mentor junior machinists, and advise engineers on manufacturability and design optimizations.

Key Responsibilities

Machinist Level 3

Manufacture precision components using both manual and CNC machines under minimal supervision.

Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and G&M code to meet critical tolerances and material specifications.

Operate in glovebox and controlled environments while following strict Conduct of Operations, Safety, and Engineering policies.

Perform process troubleshooting and contribute to improvements in machining techniques and production flow.

Maintain safety certifications, participate in HRP, and adhere to DOE Q clearance requirements.

Machinist Level 4 (In addition to Level 3 duties)

Lead machining projects from planning through execution, including scheduling and coordination with engineers and project stakeholders.

Mentor and train less experienced machinists on safe handling practices, machine operation, and setup techniques.

Evaluate part designs for manufacturability, cost, schedule, and technical feasibility.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance precision, efficiency, and quality across the shop floor.

Serve as a technical leader in advanced machining processes involving hazardous and sensitive materials.

Required Qualifications

For All Candidates:

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and enrollment in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).

Proficient in interpreting blueprints, CAD files, and technical documentation.

Skilled in using hand tools, precision measuring equipment, and machine setup (manual and CNC).

Demonstrated experience machining tight-tolerance components from complex materials.

Comfort working in PPE and controlled environments, with willingness to meet physical demands of the role.

Machinist Level 4 (Additional Requirements):

Demonstrated leadership in machining operations and mentoring junior staff.

Expertise in CAD/CAM programming and custom G&M code development.

Ability to assess and improve manufacturability of complex designs and make technical recommendations.

Proven track record in safety, project coordination, and delivering high-quality components under strict requirements.

Education & Experience

Machinist 3: Associate's Degree in Machining Technologies (or equivalent) and 4+ years of relevant experience; OR 6+ years of prototype experience; OR Journeyperson qualification and 4+ years of experience.

Machinist 4: Associate's Degree in Machining Technologies (or equivalent) and 6+ years of experience; OR 8+ years of prototype experience; OR Journeyperson qualification and 6+ years of experience.

Note: Position falls under DOE Order 426.2 and requires at minimum a high school diploma.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience machining plutonium, uranium, beryllium, or other hazardous/special materials.

Familiarity with classified environments and secured data handling.

Active DOE Q clearance.

Strong background in working with classified matter protection protocols and glovebox operations.
