Southeast Asia Correspondent
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious and versatile correspondent to cover the evolving geopolitics and security dynamics of Southeast Asia. Home to some of the world’s most vibrant and fastest growing economies, Southeast Asia has also become the focus of intense global power competition, with China, the U.S. and increasingly Russia working to secure their respective spheres of influence. Conflicting claims and increased militarization of the South China Sea have generated tensions among major powers over a vitally important trade route, presenting serious military and diplomatic challenges for Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam. At the same time, the U.S. military is overhauling its force structure to meet the challenge of China’s increasingly assertive military posture in the Pacific. That comes just as the Trump administration is reassessing its relationships with longtime allies, creating new uncertainty for the region. The ideal candidate for this position has excellent analytical skills and the storytelling chops to bring geostrategic and defense stories to life for the Journal’s global audience.
