St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Office of Career Guidance within the Dean of Basic Sciences Office in the School of Medicine, beginning 7/14/2025
Objective
The Office of Career Guidance Basic Sciences Career Advisor improves the quality of SGU students' experience during their pre-clinical years by providing one-on-one and group support. Communication between the career advisors and students’ applicable Academic Advisors (AA) is expected. The roles of career advisor and AA may overlap at times, as students' academic profiles and performance will impact matriculation through pre-clinical terms and has implications on their post graduate training competitiveness.
Essential Functions
+ Provide and maintain a supportive environment for students.
+ Availability to meet with assigned student(s) on a regular basis, from terms 1-5.
+ Provide strategic advice and guidance toward applications for obtaining a residency.
+ Acknowledge receipt and respond to all student communications and inquiries in a timely manner (e.g., within 24] hours).
+ Document all conversations and communications with students and others in a timely manner through Insight and/or any other system as may be designated by supervisor.
+ Attend and participate in regular meetings with the Assistant Dean of Students of the OCG and the other RMs·
+ Remain current on all SGUSOM policies, the SGUSOM website, the OCG website and content of each of the OCG webinars.
+ Hold one-on-one meetings with Basic Sciences students to review academic profile, history of behavioral issues and gain an understanding of their residency application strategy. Parallel specialty selection will also be discussed as appropriate.
+ Maintain and update records of student meetings using insight software and/or such other platform as may be designated by supervisor.
+ Provide guidance, including recommendations, with regard to students’ (Electronic Residency Application Service) ERAS Personal Statement.
+ Provide guidance throughout the residency application process, from start to finish, in coordination with other SGUSOM departments and advisors, including but not limited to, reviewing and providing timely and applicable guidance and recommendations on scheduling of rotations, interviews, application materials, program lists, interview lists and student options, questions and concerns.
+ Hold meetings with individuals and small groups to assist in preparation for residency interviews. These meetings should include, but not be limited to, viewing sample interview questions and ad-hoc questions such as “Teach me something.”
+ Hold additional meetings with students as required.
+ Remain current on the changes in US graduate medical education and familiarity with the current SGUSOM Advisor Handbook.
+ Attend SGUSOM meetings, faculty meetings, preparatory sessions and other meetings as required.
+ Create and develop analytics on residency match application data, interview data, etc.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
+ Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
+ Must be able to remain calm under pressure and work in sometimes stressful environment and take appropriate action.
+ Effectively communicate with others using multiple platforms and modalities.
+ Must be organized and able to work around student schedules.
+ Must be collaborative.
+ Must be able to hold meetings in person and via videoconference.
Hours and Travel
+ A typical work week is eight hours per day, Monday-Friday
+ Some weekend work may be required.
+ Attendance is required at the annual clinical faculty meeting in Grenada.
+ This job may require occasional travel
Qualifications
+ Master's degree (Psychology or Education degree focus viewed favorably)
+ Prior advisor experience preferred.
+ Suitable experience in the Residency Program administration (PD, APD, education faculty, etc.)
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Ability to communicate effectively through various medium and diverse audiences.
+ Must be trained or willing to undertake training in FERPA and any required training required of SGUSOM employees.
+ Ability to properly, effectively and efficiently document conversations and communications and make Insight Program entries documenting student contacts (and/or entries on such other platform as may be designated by supervisor).
+ Demonstrate a willingness and capacity to work effectively with students in a professional manner.
+ Ability to effectively provide education, guidance and feedback to students during their clinical years in a one on one and group settings.

+ This is a full time position in the Caribbean island of Grenada.
