Chewy is seeking a Software Engineer II for our Release Engineering team in Boston, MA! At Chewy, it is our mission to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents (and partners) everywhere! The Infrastructure Engineering organization develops services and tools to enable, support, and optimize software development processes and practices for Chewy engineers. In this role, you will enhance existing systems with automation, improve developer experience and productivity, and build observability metrics of business applications that power the e-commerce platform and beyond. Further, you will be on a high performing engineering team where we value broad-based technical skills in cloud-based services, databases, security, serverless technologies, and more. You will have the opportunity to collaborate across the engineering organization to deliver self-service solutions which empower internal customers to move rapidly while building on Chewy’s enterprise platforms.
What You’ll Do:
Contribute to every aspect of the software development lifecycleArchitect a resilient system for a customer-facing web application from scratchEnsure systems are fully CI/CD and have responsibility of a plan to get to CI/CD if not there yetDrive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative developmentDebug production issues across services and technology stackContinuously measure and optimize the performance, effectiveness, and uptime of backend servicesApply algorithms, data structures, and design patterns to build scalable and performant codeCollaborate with Team Members to drive solutions to standardize methodologies, workflows, reusable modules, and toolingParticipate in setting guidelines for evolving development practices, as well as mentoring junior engineersThink creatively to solve problems that don’t have existing solutionsConduct design and code reviews and improve engineering rigor and standardParticipate in on-call rotations and operational excellenceWhat You’ll Need:
BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience3+ years of strong programming experience with backend technologies like Java and PythonMust be team oriented and have a customer first approachProficiency in Computer Science fundamentals – object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysisBe a hands-on Engineer spending significant percentage of their time writing code or debugging issuesKnowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operationsExperience evaluating, measuring, and tuning application performanceExperience with distributed SCM (GitHub a plus), DevOps, AWSExperience working across fully automated stacks in a CI/CD ecosystemExperience mentoring and training the engineering community on technical issuesSharp analytical abilities and proven design skills & design patternsExperience with designing, building and deploying scalable, highly available systemsBonus (if applicable):
Experience in e-commerceExperience with Scrum, XP or other agile methodologies a plusGood communication skills with both technical and business audiencesExperience with cloud & orchestration technologies (AWS Services, Terraform, Ansible, etc.)Strong background with modern tools and environments (e.g., Chaos Engineering, web services, version control systems, bug/issue tracking tools)Experience with OpenAPI, Swagger, or stoplight.ioExperience with configuration and deployment management via Terraform or AnsibleInfrastructure automation through DevOps scripting (E.g. shell, Python, Ruby, Powershell)Experience with data analysis/mining in large scale database environmentsChewy is an equal opportunity employer.
