Description The Amazon Time Sync service is a sophisticated platform that delivers precise time to EC2 instances, network infrastructure, Amazon Fulfillment Centers, and retail locations. The service is a combination of hardware and software infrastructures to deliver reference clocks with high accuracy. Time synchronization is a critical requirement of modern, distributed computer systems. Service oriented architectures need to keep accurate time stamped logs across multiple services and multiple instances for debugging and root cause analysis. Authentication and authorization protocols are built on the foundation of accepting connection only with correct timestamps. Distributed systems such as synchronous databases require global synchronization of master nodes to achieve transaction consistency. Financial regulators require accurate timestamps from market participants to ensure trading fairness and auditability. The Time Sync team is looking for a strong technical leader to manage a highly skilled team of software engineers as they refine, optimize, and expand this service to manage this increasing scale and feature demand in a fast-growth environment. In this position you will manage and provide technical direction to a team of builders, as well as think big about the future of the service. Key job responsibilities * Direct management of the software engineering team, including supporting and growing the team, and recruiting/hiring new team members. * Translation of complex functional and technical requirements into detailed plans and schedules; manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team by defining, implementing and maintaining a coherent, progressive development strategy. * Lead the evolution of the software engineering practices within the organization (metrics, development methodology, innovation). * Understand and set a high bar for all parts of the DevOps lifecycle, including design, automation, documentation, monitoring, and testing. * Be an advocate and drive optimization across the organization. Basic Qualifications - 3+ years of engineering team management experience - 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience - 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations - Experience partnering with product or program management teams Preferred Qualifications - Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy - Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
