Summary The Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) manages the daily operation of the Suicide Prevention Program, provides care coordination and case management/monitoring, administers crisis intervention services, promotes crisis resources, provides suicide prevention education and training, and collects/records mandatory data at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC. Responsibilities Duties: The SPC is a member of the Suicide Prevention Team, as outlined in MCM 116-05 and 116-04, and is programmatically and professionally responsible to the supervisory Outreach/Consultation & Suicide Prevention Coordinator (O/C&SPC) within the Psychiatry Outreach/Consultation Section of Psychiatry Service, with the SPC working alongside the supervisory O/C&SPC in the development of policies and procedures for program operations specific to the implementation of suicide prevention strategies within the medical center to help ensure that all appropriate measures are being taken to prevent suicide in our veteran patient population Primary duties include the coordination and monitoring of mental health and medical services for veterans identified as "high risk" for suicide, resulting in the Category I Patient Record Flag (PRF), High Risk Suicide Flag. Working in conjunction with the veteran's Mental Health Treatment Coordinator (MHTC) and clinical treatment team, the SPC provides suicide prevention consultation, tracks treatment progress, and provides individualized, comprehensive case management services. Additional tasks involve crisis intervention, prevention and post prevention activities, Veterans Crisis Line referral follow-up, providing social work intervention and referral as clinically indicated. The designation of SPC is administratively responsibilities for clinical program development and is accountable for Suicide Prevention Case Management program effectiveness and modification of service patterns. This includes collecting data and, as requested, preparing reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. In addition this position is assigned veterans with highly-complex health or mental health problems who are on the facility's "high risk" list for suicide, requiring expert level psychosocial interventions. Promotion to the GS-12 full performance level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree experience in the field of clinical social work (VA or non-VA experience) and licensing or certification in a state at the independent practice level. A doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work maybe substituted for the required one year post-MSW experience in a clinical setting. The GS-12 SPC additionally has experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, with at least two years in an area of specialized social work practice. The GS-12 SPC must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Indiana requires Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) Indiana requires Licensed Clinical Social Worker LCSW Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12 Experience and Education One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator Must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring. Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines fort he program. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program. Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s). Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
