Responsibilities The Sheet-Metal Worker, Maintenance fabricates, installs and maintains in good repair the sheet-metal equipment and fixtures (such as machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers, tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, metal roofing) of an establishment. Work involves most of the following: planning and laying out all types of sheet-metal maintenance work from blueprints, models, or other specifications, setting up and operating all available types of sheet-metal working machines, using a variety of hand tools in cutting, bending, forming, shaping, fitting and assembling, and installing sheet-metal articles as required. In general, the work of the maintenance sheet-metal worker requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience. Qualifications Experience fabricating, installing, and repairing sheet-metal equipment and fixtures such as machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers, tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, and metal roofing. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, models, and specifications to plan and lay out sheet-metal maintenance work. Skilled in setting up and operating various types of sheet-metal working machines. Proficient in using hand tools for cutting, bending, forming, shaping, fitting, assembling, and installing sheet-metal components. Strong understanding of safety standards and precision work practices in a maintenance environment. Formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience in sheet-metal work preferred. Work requires prolonged periods of continuous exertion when bending and shaping complex or bulky sheet metal products. Also requires extended periods of standing and walking, climbing, working in cramped and awkward positions, and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and power tools. Weight lifted or physical force exerted to form sheet metal may occasionally exceed 50 pounds. Work is normally performed in well lighted, heated, and ventilated shop areas. Some outside work is performed usually in periods of good weather. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls and burns. Appropriate safety equipment such as hearing protection, safety shoes, gloves, safety goggles, respirators, etc., are required.
