Summary THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (Title 32), Position Description Number D1371000 and is part of the IL 182 AW, National Guard. Responsibilities As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (Title 32), WG-3806-10, you will accomplish the inspection, repair, modification, installation and troubleshooting of sheet metal, fiberglass, bonded honeycomb and other structural materials and components as well as treatment (i.e., mechanical and chemical), and painting of missiles, aircraft powered and nonpowered Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE), and monitoring aircraft and equipment washing. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: Inspect aircraft and determine nature and extent of repairs using technical orders. Perform inspection of damage or deterioration on plastic, fiberglass, and bonded structures. Identify and treat corrosion using mechanical and chemical testing procedures. Conduct corrosion and washing inspections to ensure compliance with scheduled plans. Use hand or powered drilling and cutting tools to remove and install contoured skins. Set up and operate brakes, rolls, shears, dimpling machines, drill presses, and saws. Use portable powered sanders, buffers, scrapers, grinders, and bead blasters. Maintain and requisition supplies and equipment necessary for structural repairs. Perform removal, repair, and installation of structural parts like spars, ribs, and skins. Seal structures to make them pressure, water, and weather tight. Install aircraft fasteners including heat-treated, high-shear, blind-type rivets. Treat metal surfaces using passivation and pickling procedures to prevent oxidation. Devise and calculate patterns using triangulation, radial, and parallel line development. Prepare and design layouts, jigs, dies, and templates for fabrication or modification. Perform layout, bending, cutting, and forming of local manufactured items. Work from blueprints, technical orders, diagrams, and work orders for structural fabrication. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement. Qualifications AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of consideration for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence: The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG. The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees. The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible. The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership. The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens. Military Grades: Enlisted Only - Minimum rank requirement of A1C and May not exceed the rank of SSgt. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: MUST possess experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 Level - MUST possess specialized experience which includes experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment. Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys. Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
