**JOB SUMMARY**
We are seeking an Senior Technologist / Team Lead to support our GEMS site in Chicago, IL. The GEMS Senior Technologist / Team Lead is a highly skilled team leader who can work independently and within a team to maintain, monitor and help coordinate the health, production, and physical environment of client or Charles River Laboratories (CRL) animals housed at CRL facilities, as well as provide guidance. These environments may include isolators or individual ventilated cages (IVC).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Highly skilled in techniques needed to perform basic husbandry tasks in a resourceful and efficient way, including supplying food, bedding, water and environmental enrichment.
+ Highly skilled in techniques and concepts of maintaining rat and mouse colonies, including setting up matings, weaning and sexing of offspring, genetic sampling of animals, processing samples and other technical tasks as required.
+ Highly skilled in techniques and concepts of handling rodents (mice and rats), including restraining of animals for collection of fecal pellets, ear/tail sampling as well as tagging animals for identification.
+ Highly skilled in techniques and concepts of observing animals for any abnormalities or common health issues.
+ Highly skilled in techniques and concepts of identifying and selecting specific animals for customer shipments, genotyping, health monitoring, matings, transfers or other various tasks as needed.
+ Understand and comply with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new practices.
+ Often makes recommendations for revising or creating new procedures.
+ Strictly follow all animal welfare standards and biosecurity procedures necessary to maintain isolator integrity and animal health status, including the proper sterilization and entry of supplies/animals into isolators.
+ Workload contains high-level responsibilities and requires independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve issues. Must be highly effective, detailed-oriented and enter accurate data entry into Internet Colony Management (ICM).
+ Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal laws governing the use of research animals.
+ Often acts as a facilitator and team leader of department responsibilities.
+ Perform general housekeeping and adhere to EHS, safety, and ergonomic procedures.
+ Self-organize, plan and execute tasks independently. Ability to adapt and champion change.
+ Highly skilled in general computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master required computer programs, databases and other applications (i.e. ICM and Microsoft Office). Contributes to the development of new department concepts, programs and solutions.
+ Coordinates other operations personnel in department when Supervisor is absent.
+ Facilitates studies, special projects, efficiency improvements, engagement opportunities, etc.
+ Assist in providing leadership and motivation to department personnel.
+ Identify issues and owns implementation of solutions.
+ Champions and facilitates CRL DNA in day-to-day work.
+ Perform all other related duties as assigned.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
Candidate must possess one of the following:
+ High School Diploma or GED and 4 years of leadership and/or animal care experience
+ Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of leadership and/or animal care experience
+ Masters Degree and 6 months of leadership and/or animal care experience
Other Required Qualifications:
+ Ability to communicate and follow verbal and written directions accurately
+ Ability to multi-task
+ Demonstrated organizational skills and close attention to detail
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ AALAS certification at the ALAT or above
+ Experience using computers and peripheral hardware
Pay Transparency
_The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00 / hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location._
