Job Title : Senior Technical Lead – Manufacturing Technology

Purpose of this role is to drive and lead the delivery of the projects that comprise of manufacturing process design & analysis, product design optimization, cost reduction, product improvement projects that arise from the product sustainment & product development team across the product lifecycle and product teardown analysis.
The position will be in the Product Sustainment team with a primary focus is to lead manufacturing engineering activity to support the development and launch of new products. This integrates product design and manufacturing, ensuring that new products are designed for manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and scalability.
Lead the analysis, and benchmarking of competitive products via disassembly, should costing or other Value engineering methodologies. This role involves deep technical investigation into product architecture, materials, manufacturing processes, and cost structures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering with an ability to translate teardown insights into actionable recommendations for product improvement and development.

Key Responsibilities and Specific Accountabilities:
The following are the key responsibilities, and the successful candidate will work with line manager to create clear yearly objectives for themselves and team. These will be generated from the business strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Collaborate with product design teams to ensure new designs are optimised for efficient and cost-effective manufacturing.
Process Development: Support development, and validation of manufacturing processes for new products, including tooling, fixtures, and automation.
Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimisation, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
Supplier Collaboration: Work with suppliers to ensure component manufacturability and quality standards are met.
Root Cause Analysis: Investigate and resolve manufacturing issues using structured problem-solving tools (e.g., 8D, Fishbone, 5 Whys).
Compliance & Safety: Ensure all manufacturing processes comply with safety, regulatory, and quality standards.
Lead & execute comprehensive teardown analyses of internal and competitor products to evaluate components, materials, manufacturing techniques, and cost structures and drive value engineering (VAVE) opportunities
Leverage advanced manufacturing technologies and simulation tools to innovate and enhance product and process performance.
Champion a zero-harm safety culture, promoting Weir’s safety-first behaviors in the Teardown lab maintaining proper tools, safety protocols and documentation standards
Communicate effectively across all levels, using presentations, dashboards, and stakeholder engagements to ensure collaboration and alignment.
Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive product launches.
Mentor junior engineers and interns in manufacturing engineering, teardown methodologies and best practices.
Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications
Education & Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related technical field in Mechanical or Manufacturing design.
Proficient in CAD software, particularly Siemens NX, Teamcenter, and other engineering documentation tools.
Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate in cross-functional teams.
Strong background in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Data analytics is good to have
Experience
Minimum of 10+ years of experience in manufacturing or process engineering, reverse engineering or product development.
Strong understanding of mechanical components, assemblies and systems and the form, fit and function dynamics
Proficiency in tools such as calipers, microscopes, X-ray imaging, etc and CAD software
Experience with cost modeling and BOM analysis is a plus
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Experience in tear down analysis, value engineering (VAVE), and cost optimization.
Strong command of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Statistical Process Control (SPC) principles.
Solid understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, tooling, and cost modeling.
Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional team and deliver results in multi-stakeholder, global environments.
Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) best practices.
Strong documentation, communication and leadership skills, with the ability to present complex technical findings to diverse audiences.
