Provide strategic legal advice on tax-related matters to lines of business; provide counsel, guidance, and general oversight on tax issues primarily to asset management business as well as questions related to advisor compensation; respond to tax questions from business partners on all aspects of the tax law as it applies to products, clients, and employees; translate complex tax law for business partners and executives and assist in business risk analysis in situations that are relatively straightforward or those the Tax department has previously addressed; understand business model and procedures and ensure tax laws and regulations are being met. May review more complex cases with more senior members of the team.
Technical knowledge in asset management, with a focus on hedge funds and RICs is critical. Background in advisor compensation or independent contractor tax issues is helpful but not required. Willingness and interest in learning other areas, including advisor compensation and company tax support is necessary.
Assist in the design of, review, and approve new products and features created within business lines ensuring tax requirements are met. May discuss more complex situations with more senior members of the team.
Monitor and influence proposed tax legislation and regulations affecting the company, clients, and products. Escalate concerns and offer recommendations for solutions to issues that arise. Represent the organization in trade association committees, contribute information, voice concerns, and influence trade association priorities. Analyze federal and state tax law and industry practice and communicate to business partners and executives as appropriate. Support our federal and state lobbyists with pending legislation and regulations regarding tax implications.
Independently review tax-related materials provided to advisors, clients, and employees as to ensure that such materials are technically accurate and not misleading. Assist in the creation of tax-related materials for particularly complex legal topics.
Respond to questions which arise during audits by regulatory authorities on tax-related matters. Represent organization in legal challenges to audits up to and including litigation.
Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate degree and active bar license.
7-10 years relevant experience.
Proficiency in legal research and writing.
Base knowledge in tax law, regulations, and administrative guidance.
Ability to identify potential tax issues, gather relevant information, and perform legal research and analysis. Demonstrate thorough and thoughtful legal tax analysis.
Effective communication both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate complex tax concepts clearly and succinctly.
Strong relationship-building skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with business partners throughout the company and across the Tax department, while working respectfully and inclusively with colleagues.
Ability to take initiative and drive results with progressively less supervision, and handle day-to-day inquiries independently, using judgment as to when to escalate more complex matters.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with in-house counsel, law firm, accounting firm, or government.
Previous industry experience preferred (financial services) but not required.

Base Pay Salary
The estimated base salary for this role is $193,500 - $261,300 / year. Base salaries are determined in part based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographical work location. In addition, most of our roles are eligible for variable pay in the form of bonus, commissions, and/or long-term incentives depending on the role.
