Senior Structural Engineer - Seismic Focus - FTC

About Us

We are Ocado Technology and we empower global grocery retailers with cutting-edge cloud, robotics, AI, and IoT. Our Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) powers highly automated Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs), enabling efficient, single-pick online grocery delivery

About the Role

12 month Fixed Term Contract.

Within the Automation department, our Storage development teams focus on delivering innovative, reliable products tailored to the diverse needs of our clients and customers.

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will conduct structural analyses of ASRS physical storage infrastructures, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and codes. You will provide expert input to designers to ensure structural integrity, feasibility, and compliance are seamlessly integrated into design solutions.

With a strong foundation in seismic and earthquake engineering, you will support the design and structural assessment of Ocado’s grid structures. These systems can operate in seismically active regions and must be designed for robustness under both operational and seismic loading conditions. You will be responsible for analysis, validation, and reporting of structural performance, helping to ensure that systems meet global and local compliance requirements for structural and earthquake resistance.

Develop and run both global structural models (e.g., to assess overall sway, load paths, and seismic base shear distribution) and local models (e.g., connections, brackets, anchors ) using appropriate FEA tools. Interpret FEA outputs to identify governing load cases, verify compliance with design codes, and support seismic,  fatigue and buckling assessments. Develop and improve internal tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy in structural modelling and analysis. Apply relevant global design codes and standards to develop compliant, site-specific structural solutions in different locations around the world (eg ASCE 7-16, AISC 360-16, AISI S100-16, ACI 318-19, Eurocode 2, Eurocode 3, Eurocode 8 ) Develop and review load combinations for ultimate and serviceability limit states with a focus on seismic loading scenarios. Prepare high-quality structural reports and calculations, with clear documentation of assumptions, modelling approaches, and results. Support the development and continuous improvement of internal tools and design methodologies for assessing the structural and seismic performance. Evaluate risks such as buckling, fatigue, and material nonlinearity under dynamic actions, and provide mitigation strategies. Participate in design reviews, compliance checks, and peer reviews with a focus on structural robustness under seismic events.

About you

Degree in Civil  Engineering with a structural focus; MSc or PhD in Earthquake/Seismic Engineering highly desirable.
Experience as a structural engineer and/or stress analyst, with demonstrable involvement in seismic design projects. Proficient in FEA tools for global  (GSA, SAP 2000) and local ( Ansys, Altair, Abaqus) analysis Deep knowledge in structural standards (ASCE, NBCC, Eurocode), with particualr attention ot steel and seismic Proven ability to define, analyse, and optimise structural systems under seismic conditions both for individual components and integrated systems. Able to produce high-quality technical documentation and communicate complex engineering decisions to multidisciplinary teams.
