Senior Strategy Analyst

UPMC Corporate Strategy is hiring a Senior Strategy Analyst to join our team!  This role will work Monday through Friday during standard business hours. The Senior Strategy Analyst will be a vital member of various project teams that address strategy and planning issues across all of UPMC’s divisions (Hospital and Community Services, Physician Services, Health Plan, and International and Commercial Services).

This position provides: research (e.g., conduct literature reviews to understand changing clinical treatments), reporting (e.g., calculate market share), and analysis (e.g., identify and explain trends underlying volume changes) to support a portfolio of projects. This position develops new analytical and reporting tools in anticipation of new projects/engagements.

Responsibilities:

Provide analytical expertise in the development and support of various projects that focus on environmental and market assessments, new business development, and clinical utilization patterns. Determine the most efficient, effective, and valid analytical methodologies that will answer underlying strategy questions and address clients’ needs; validate these methodologies with clients and content experts throughout UPMC. Utilize Cognos reporting tools, SQL programming and advanced Excel capabilities (e.g., program macros) to build data sets for analysis which would include: health care volume and utilization trends, predictive modeling, basic modeling, and general research and decision support activities. Ensures the quality of others’ analytical work through a formal review/quality check process. Identify technical errors and limitations, as well as potential methodological and logic deficiencies in final deliverables. Develop validation and testing protocols to ensure accuracy and quality of final deliverables. Serves as an expert resource to Research Analysts and Strategy Analysts; mentors and formally trains new members of the Department in how to use analytical tools and data resources. Demonstrate broad knowledge of the healthcare industry; actively research new trends and dynamics; identify market dynamics that may affect UPMC and convey these to the Departments’ leaders; learn about UPMC’s full spectrum of operations and markets served. Selected duties include but are not limited to the creation of decision support tools such as utilization models-both descriptive and predictive; profiles and assessments of market trends; profiles and assessments of new markets; profiles and assessments of competitors and complementors; profiles and assessments of clinical capacity and patient throughput; literature reviews; complete maps using software tools; analysis of patient satisfaction data. Special emphasis is placed upon developing new reporting capabilities that can be used by other members of the Department, as well as automating reporting and analytical tools. Apply Cognos and SQL programming to ensure these tools accurately and consistently report viable measures. Understand data sources and tools that exist throughout UPMC (e.g., financial and quality data systems); apply this knowledge to the Department’s projects; act as a liaison to the owners of these data systems to ensure they are applied to the Department’s project.  Fully document and understand the definitions, limitations, and applicability of different data sources; convey these parameters to clients/consultants during the formulation of data requests. Identify and develop new sources of data; integrate these sources with existing databases. Represent the Department on enterprise-wide work groups and teams. Support a portfolio of multiple active projects simultaneously (typically four to six). Synthesize findings and implications of data and analysis work into reports and exhibits that can be used by clients.
