Senior SQL Database Administrator

 

Responsibilities

Oversee and maintain SQL Server, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Solr instances, ensuring optimal configuration, system integrity, and sustained site stabilityContinuously monitor system health and database performance to uphold high standards of availability, scalability, sustainability, security, and complianceDiagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in real-time; communicate critical incidents promptly and manage recovery coordinationOptimize and automate routine administrative tasks, manage incident tracking, and maintain thorough documentation of all changes using change management and proper proceduresCollaborate closely with development teams to optimize queries, refine database schemas, and enhance data modelsConduct thorough SQL code reviews with a focus on performance tuning, security, and scalability best practicesSupport analytics and reporting teams by managing and evolving existing data reporting systemsOwn critical system support through participation in an on-call rotation, ensuring rapid response and 24/7 operational reliability 

Required Skills

5 years of experience as a SQL Server DBA or similar roleExtensive experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization, including execution plan analysis and indexing strategiesProficient in backup, restore, and recovery models, ensuring reliable data protectionStrong knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions, particularly SQL Server Always OnExpert in T-SQL DDL/DML with proficiency in scripting and SSIS Familiar with cloud-based database management on AWS, including EC2, RDS, and DynamoDB, with additional exposure to PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and SolrUnderstanding of Change Data CaptureSolid grasp of Windows Server administration, including Active Directory integrationIn-depth understanding of SQL Server internals, including isolation levels, transaction and batch processing, lock management, and error handlingWillingness to adopt a database-agnostic approach and learn and embrace emerging technologiesStrong critical thinking and problem-solving abilitiesExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsProficiency with Windows PowerShell or Python for scripting and automationProven ability to work collaboratively within a team, mentor other data professionals, and contribute to shared knowledge and developmentProactive and self-motivated, with a strong ability to independently create and manage tickets, prioritize work effectively, and see projects through to completion

Onboarding

First 30 Days

Gain access to systems, tools, and documentationDocument environments and configurations; assess backups, monitoring, and HA setupIdentify security, monitoring, and performance gaps; draft recommendationsPropose patching and additional health check automation plans

Days 31-60

Resolve any critical issues found in the first 30 days; standardize configurations across environmentsImprove and automate monitoring for key systems from 35% to 65%Begin implementing automation and “single pane of glass” visibilityApply security patches to non-prod environments

Days 61-90

Finalize monitoring automation and production patchingPropose upgrade plans for SQL Server, Solr, MongoDB, and OSAssess AWS and Solr performance; recommend improvements 

Location:  Austin, TX 78701, remote or hybrid optional team environment

Salary:  $120-140k base salary ($140-160k estimated total comp)
