Bloomberg Application Services (BAS) is the core microservice framework powering the backend of virtually all Bloomberg products and services, responsible for reliably handling billions of dollars of transactions daily. The BAS network services over 6 million requests per second across thousands of applications and tens of thousands of machines on our global network. We provide a stable, fault-tolerant, scalable architecture with flexible routing rules and support for enterprise security and monitoring capabilities used by over 9,000 Bloomberg software engineers! We are a global group of software professionals composed of several teams, each focused on different aspects of BAS software development.
The RoleYou will be part of the BAS Enterprise team focused on the security and configuration of the BAS service mesh, which helps process ~400 million requests/minute across 80K+ machines. On top of this, the BAS Enterprise team manages critical infrastructure that routes requests between different trust zones in the service mesh that authenticates and authorizes ~2 million requests/minute. The solutions the team builds have company-wide impact, and are used by almost every engineer at Bloomberg.
Here are some of the ongoing and upcoming projects of the BAS Enterprise team:Command and Control for the service mesh, improving the security and functionality of diagnostic and operational tooling
Improved integration with Bloomberg’s internal cloud computing platform and open-source software such as Istio/Envoy to provide a better quality of service for BAS services running on cloud-native platforms.
Building tools to allow service providers and platform owners better visibility into the tuneables of the services they own or host
