Dr. Jonee Wilson in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia is seeking a Senior Research Specialist to collaborate on an NSF-funded project that focuses on building and testing a theoretical coaching framework while advancing conceptual mathematics learning for students with learning differences. Specifically, the project aims to center the voices, knowledge, and experiences of students with learning differences in supporting teachers to provide these students with access to conceptually oriented mathematics instruction.
In collaboration with senior research faculty, Research Specialist Senior employees participate as skilled individual contributors and/or lead researchers on one or more research projects. They serve as experts in their research field. They may be responsible for administrative, financial and staff supervision, as well as planning aspects of the project, where funding allows. They present results of studies at professional meetings and other forums and oversee other researchers and staff.
We seek someone who has experience with qualitative research. We also seek someone with teaching and research experience in mathematics education and special education. In addition, we seek someone with strong relationships in Virginia public school systems.
Responsibilities include:
Designing instrumentation, theoretical models, equipment, and other vehicles for data gathering and analysis.
Investigating, modifying, and applying new procedures, techniques, and technologies, integrating new findings in fields of study.
Conducting research in areas of expertise, writing results for multiple audiences and for inclusion in broader research projects.
Overseeing development of data collection processes and instruments. Monitoring integrity of data collection and use of protocols and procedures.
Reviewing and critiquing reports and analyses of other researchers, and conducting ongoing, periodic, and final analyses of data using specialized techniques. Writing and collaborating with other researchers on manuscripts, abstracts, and other publications of research findings.
Contributing to and supporting work with study participants (e.g., supporting project managers in recruiting and training instructional coaches, teachers, and students)
Co-developing a coaching framework alongside students, instructional coaches, and the research team for supporting teachers
Assisting with qualitative data collection and analysis efforts, including conducting interviews and focus groups with teachers, coaches, and/or students
Establishing and sustaining partnerships in local schools (e.g., visiting schools to build relationships with practitioners and recruit participants)
Minimum Requirements
Education: Master's or terminal degree
Experience: Five years of specialized experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: A Doctoral degree in Education, Mathematics Education, Special Education, Human Development, or a relevant social science discipline.
Experience: Experience with research regarding issues of K-12 special education and/or mathematics education.
Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Salary Range: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Funding Details: This is a 1 year restricted position, which is dependent on funding. Continuation in the role after the initial first year is contingent upon funding availability.
Work Arrangements: This is a 32 hour per week position. This position is fully remote and may be performed outside of Charlottesville, VA, in alignment with UVA’s remote work guidelines.
