About the Role
This reporting position is responsible for overseeing some of MLex’s most prominent areas of news coverage: competition law and data privacy & security coverage, including artificial intelligence, in Japan.
The reporter is required to track regulatory development by the government, including legislation, enforcement actions and court cases, involving these core areas of MLex’s coverage.
The reporter will also need to monitor key government agencies, attend functions and speeches, while building a strong network of contacts in the legal community. Obtaining exclusive interviews, especially with government regulators, is a key objective.
This Tokyo-based position also includes a role in monitoring M&A regulatory activity, including reviews of deals and possible appeals of those reviews.

In all these coverage areas, the reporter will occasionally coordinate on stories with reporters elsewhere in Asia, as well as in the US and the EU. The role requires strong writing and analytical skills and a willingness to examine the broader context of MLex’s day-to-day coverage of Japanese regulatory affairs.

Responsibilities

Writing clear, well-organized news stories and analysisIdentifying current topics for articles/commentaries, including covering trials and similar scenariosCoordinating with reporters and editors to develop coverageLocating and organizing relevant information from public documents and other sourcesDeveloping personality profiles and features.

Requirements

Have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or possess a legal backgroundExperience reporting and writing newsHave solid writing skills and a demonstrated ability to be proactive in shaping MLex’s coverageBe able to demonstrate great research skillsPossess the ability to provide analysis of events and documents, illuminating context and big-picture trends
