We are looking for you to join our team as a Senior Principal Process Engineer based out of Linthicum, MD.

As a Senior Principal Process Engineer, you will:

Design and plan layouts for manufacturing processes, including additive manufacturing (metallic and non-metallic), heat treatment and alternative processes to minimize distortion and maximize strength, and surface finishing techniques such as chromate, anodizing, etching, polishing, and painting.

Develop and implement pre- and post-processing methods to achieve required mechanical properties and oversee other material-processing operations.

Plan the sequence of operations and specify procedures for cutting, shaping, and preparing materials, balancing technical requirements with cost-effectiveness.

Conduct tests and measurements throughout research, evaluation, and production stages to monitor and control variables such as laser speed, recoater material, atmospheric exposure, shielding gas and flow rate, travel speed, and layer thickness, ensuring required density, yield strength, and elongation.

Establish and submit processing requirements for the design and acquisition of manufacturing and test equipment.

Troubleshoot processes that do not meet expected results.

Coordinate with Supplier Quality to ensure Northrop Grumman standards are followed for externally manufactured components.

Represent Northrop Grumman in industry committees and consortiums, including AWS (American Welding Society), AMS (Aerospace Materials Specification), America Makes, and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials).

Communicate impending industry changes to Northrop Grumman and generate industry documentation, incorporating company lessons learned and ensuring compliance with industry standards and requirements.

This position is contingent upon the ability to obtain/maintain an active DoD Secret clearance or the successful transfer of an active DoD Secret clearance

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree with 8 years of experience, master’s degree with 6 years of experience, Ph.D. with 4 years of experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree

U.S Citizenship is required.

Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

6 years of experience in additive manufacturing and knowledge of properties and processing of aluminum alloy parts by additive manufacturing is required.

6 years of demonstrated work with tensile and fatigue testing and industry processes and requirements.

Strong technical writing skill and the ability to write process documentation with minimal oversight.

4 years of experience incorporating feedback from various sources, including technicians, operators, and engineers, to ensure technical and ergonomic capabilities in processes.

4 years if of experience establishing standard operating procedures and engaging the operations team to ensure these are followed.

Preferred Qualifications

Active DoD Secret clearance or higher.

Familiarity with industry and government specifications related to testing and performance of additive manufactured metal alloys is desired.

Establishing standard operating procedures and engaging the operations team to ensure these are followed.

Experience testing and reviewing performance data in accordance with internal and industry specifications.

Ability to work independently and under tight schedule constraints to deliver quantifiable results with documented recommendations for when to establish new processes.

Ability to read and understand established processes while looking for opportunities for existing process improvement to increase output while decreasing costs.

Experience working with external suppliers.

Published scientific papers and other documented technical writing skills a plus.

Salary Range: $119,200.00 - $178,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
