About the Role
A well-established, independent M&E consultancy with a strong regional presence is looking for an experienced Senior to Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join their growing Southampton office.
This role is ideal for someone looking to step into more technical leadership, project ownership, and client-facing responsibilities. You’ll be involved in the delivery of complex, sustainable building services projects across healthcare, education, research, commercial, and industrial sectors.
What You’ll Be Doing
Lead electrical design packages on medium to large-scale projects, from early concept to construction and handoverOversee the technical quality of design outputs, ensuring compliance with current legislation and client expectationsMentor and manage junior and intermediate engineers, supporting their development and reviewing their workCoordinate designs across disciplines (mechanical, sustainability, BIM) for fully integrated MEP solutionsEngage directly with clients, architects, and contractors — taking ownership of relationships and technical deliveryPrepare project briefs, specifications, design risk assessments, and reportsTake an active role in fee proposals, bid submissions, resourcing, and project planningDrive sustainability and innovation across electrical building services, including smart systems, low-carbon tech, and energy strategiesSupport business growth by contributing to internal best practices, QA, and team development
What You’ll Bring
Degree-qualified in Electrical or Building Services Engineering (BEng, MEng, or equivalent)Typically 7+ years of consultancy experience in building services designStrong technical background in designing low-voltage power, lighting, fire alarms, comms, and containment systemsProficient in software such as Amtech, Dialux, AutoCAD; Revit/BIM experience is highly desirableChartered or working towards CEng status with CIBSE or IETProven ability to manage projects, lead meetings, and develop lasting client relationshipsCapable of managing design teams and delivering work to a high standard within time and budgetSound commercial awareness and a proactive mindset
