Senior Packaging Design Engineer
Job Summary: We are seeking a Defense Sustainment Packaging Engineer to support service, sustainment, and logistics operations for military assets. This role requires expertise in parametric design software (Creo), Special Packaging Instructions (SPIs), Teamcenter, and MIL-STD-2073-1E compliance. The ideal candidate will develop durable, reusable, and cost-effective packaging solutions for spare parts, repairable components, and long-term storage. This position involves collaborating with logistics, engineering, and government stakeholders to ensure optimal packaging performance for global sustainment efforts. Requirements Essential Functions: 1. Military Packaging Design & Engineering + Develop parametric 3D models of packaging solutions using Creo to support defense sustainment logistics. + Create technical packaging drawings and exploded views for repairable and service parts to support SPI and validation requirements + Design long-term, reusable, and protective packaging for depot maintenance and field support. + Implement blocking, bracing, and cushioning techniques to protect sensitive military components during transport and storage. 2. Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) Development + Generate and maintain Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) for military spare parts and service kits. + Ensure SPI compliance with MIL-STD-2073-1E, MIL-STD-129, and DoD packaging regulations. 3. Lifecycle Sustainment & Logistics Integration + Utilize Teamcenter and data analytics tools to manage SPI records, technical packaging data, and sustainment documents to ensure completion of deliverables and communicate program status + Support retrograde and redistribution packaging for defense components being repaired or overhauled. + Optimize packaging for hazardous materials (HAZMAT), classified equipment, and controlled items with consideration for shipping and end-user environment 4. Military Packaging Compliance & Testing + Perform packaging validation testing (drop, vibration, environmental exposure) for ASTM4169 in a virtual environment + Conduct failure analysis and corrective actions for damaged return shipments. + Document compliance through packaging validation reports and technical evaluations 5. Continuous Improvement & Cost Reduction + Identify opportunities to use standard packaging materials to reduce variety of shipping materials needed to package service parts + Identify processes improvements and work cross-functionally to implement best practices Minimum Qualifications: 6+ years of experience in military packaging, sustainment logistics, or defense supply chain. Experience in developing SPI’s and 3D modeling packaging in Creo or similar software (eg. Solidworks, Fusion 360) Education: Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivilant experience. Experience: 6+ years of experience in military packaging, sustainment logistics, or defense supply chain. Background Prerequisites: + Must undergo and meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks and controlled substance testing. Preferred Qualifications: 8+ years of experience in packaging and SPI creation Experience in FAE simulation software Experience in data science Experience onboarding suppliers with government flow-downs and CUI/ITAR capabilities Working Conditions and Physical Demands: With or without reasonable accommodations, requires the physical and mental capacity to perform effectively all essential functions.
