Senior Network Engineer

Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Networking and Telecommunications, the Senior Network Engineer is responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and upgrading all campus wired and wireless network infrastructure. This includes edge device and Internet connectivity, network access control systems, and associated security services. This role leads internal projects focused on enhancing existing services and deploying new hardware and software solutions. Additionally, the Senior Network Engineer acts as the primary liaison and technical point of contact for a variety of projects, assessing network connectivity and cabling infrastructure requirements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Act as the subject matter expert and functional lead for the installation, configuration, and management of all wired and wireless network services, Internet connectivity, Network Access Control, for the threat and vulnerability platform and metric reporting, and other related services.

Serve as a mentor to less experienced Network and Communications Infrastructure staff and ensure that they are following established best practices for effective network operations.

Work collaboratively with the IT Information Security group and Systems/Infrastructure group to help identify network security threats and evaluate how to proactively minimize their impact on the campus network, either through changes to firewall rule sets, packet shaping, packet analysis, client-side mitigation or other means.

Plan, design, implement, and maintain network-based services and tools, including DHCP, DNS, and IP address management.

Serve as a lead network engineering resource for campus construction and renovation projects that require additions or modifications to wired and/or wireless network infrastructure or intra-building wiring plant.

Develop and manage programs related to enterprise network operations, encompassing security controls.

Audit and analyze network performance and stability, providing recommendations for hardware and software upgrades.

Manage the device registration system(s) for granting access to campus network resources and monitoring systems to identify potential malicious network activity, both internal and external.

Consult with leadership to perform and/or assist the technical support staff in the installation and set-up of computing systems and network devices according to baseline security measures and appropriate operation and functionality practices.

Maintain accurate system, network and change logs to track all device patch levels, network security policy changes, and potential security threats or attacks/probes on IT systems.

Maintain integrity and appropriate confidentiality in institutional and program operations.

Establish and maintain effective communication and cooperative working relationships to accomplish the objectives of the Information Technology Division.

Represent the university at conferences, seminars and/or meetings and serve on ad hoc and standing committees as required.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

Minimum six (6) years of progressive experience in network administration, engineering, and support.

Extensive expertise in network protocols and services, including Ethernet, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN tagging (802.1Q), bridging (802.1D), network access control (802.1X), TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, BGP, OSPF, DHCP, and IP Multicast.

Extensive knowledge of data communications hardware and software, including Cisco ASA firewalls and the next-generation Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) platform, managed via Firepower Management Center (FMC). VPN technologies, Cisco DNA Center, IOS, Identity Services Engine (ISE), Unified Computing System (UCS), and Cisco Prime. Proficient with advanced network features such as vPC, VSS, and HSRP, as well as a broad range of Cisco hardware including Catalyst 3850, 9300, 9500 series switches and Nexus 2K, 5K and 7K platforms. Strong understanding of fiber optics, UTP, and structured cabling systems.

Demonstrated knowledge of wireless networking protocols and services, including 802.11n/ac/ax standards, RADIUS authentication, and wireless security technologies such as WPA2 and WPA3.

Experience with systems and network auditing and scanning tools such as Nmap, syslog, and Nessus.

Ability to work independently and, when needed, represent the Networking and Communications Infrastructure (NCI) team in project meetings, site surveys, and related activities.

Capable of providing expert-level input and decision-making in the absence of the unit head, ensuring continuity and alignment with project goals.

PREFERRED:

Professional experience in a similar role within higher education.

Working knowledge and experience with wireless tools and technologies from Fluke (AirCheck Wi-Fi Tester), Ekahau (WLAN Planning and Site Survey Suite), and Cisco.

Ability to maintain a Best Practices approach to installation, maintenance, and security of data communications equipment in a production environment.

Familiarity with common operating systems including Red Hat Linux, Windows, and MacOS as well as knowledge of common vulnerabilities in those operating systems and how to minimize them through proper security configuration and/or additional software.

Knowledge of middleware and scripting languages including Python, Perl, and PHP.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, plus the ability to prepare clear and detailed correspondence and documentation.

Ability to establish cooperative working relationships and coordinate programs with other offices or organizations that impact on or relate to work of the program or unit.

Salary Range

$113,193.02-$122,627.78 Annually
