The Opportunity:

The Optical and Photonics Systems group of CACI is looking for candidates to help develop the next generation of optical technologies.  These include free-space optical communications terminals and modems and high-power optical sources across the optical spectrum.  Particularly, efforts will develop the next generation of capabilities, with previous successes having flown on the International Space Station as part of an optical communications relay demonstration and another having achieved the current largest data optical transmission range of >19 million miles, along with developing the Space Defense Agency’s standard terminal for laser communications.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities:

Lead the design and architecture of the mechanical subsystems for free-space optical communications terminals, modems, and high-power optical sources

Create detailed CAD models of mechanical components and assemblies using software like SolidWorks or similar

Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural integrity of mechanical systems under various loading conditions

Create presentations to document and communicate design, analysis, test results, and performance metrics to stakeholders

Work closely with other disciplines to ensure mechanical systems meet overall system requirements.

Coordinate with manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management teams to facilitate production and testing of mechanical components

Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within the mechanical engineering team

Produce build-to drawings and data packages and collaborate with and manage 3rd party vendors to resolve specification, performance, and reliability issues and realize the commercial and custom-machined parts necessary to build the subsystem

Lead the effort to transition the design into limited volume production, including development of assembly processes and writing of build procedures.

Qualifications:

Required:

US citizenship required

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or similar field, and a minimum of 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience

Proficient use of computer-aided design and analysis software, with SolidWorks strongly preferred.

Working knowledge of finite element analysis.

Experience in the design of complex subsystems with photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements.

Experience in electronic subassembly layout including board physical design, chassis or enclosure design, optical fiber routing, and electrical and optical connector selection.

Work independently with minimal guidance

Able to design in assemblies with larger number of parts and interfaces

Proficient use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

Hands-on mindset, able to transition between CAD/analysis and real hardware

Desired:

A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or similar field

Experience with being a mechanical lead for complex system or subsystem

Experience in the design of hardware to military and space design standards and manufacturing processes.

Experience in environmental testing to MIL-STD or equivalent industrial test levels, including shock, vibration, thermal, and EMI/EMC.

This position is contingent on funding and may not be filled immediately. However, this position is representative of positions within CACI that are consistently available. Individuals who apply may also be considered for other positions at CACI.
