The Opportunity:
The Optical and Photonics Systems group of CACI is looking for candidates to help develop the next generation of optical technologies. These include free-space optical communications terminals and modems and high-power optical sources across the optical spectrum. Particularly, efforts will develop the next generation of capabilities, with previous successes having flown on the International Space Station as part of an optical communications relay demonstration and another having achieved the current largest data optical transmission range of >19 million miles, along with developing the Space Defense Agency’s standard terminal for laser communications.
This position is contingent upon contract award.
Responsibilities:
Design and integrate mechatronic subsystems for laser communication systems, including gimbals, fast steering mirrors, launch locks, etc.
Perform actuator (BLDC motor, voice coil, etc) and sensor (gyros, encoders, eddy current, capacitive, etc) analysis and selection for mechatronics systems
Create detailed CAD models of mechatronic components and assemblies using software like SolidWorks or similar
Develop prototypes of mechatronic systems and conduct rigorous testing to validate performance
Prepare detailed documentation of design specifications, test results, and performance metrics
Work closely with optical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, and systems engineers to ensure systems meet overall system requirements
Develop and implement control algorithms for mechatronic systems, including PID control, feedback loops, and real-time processing
Qualifications:
Required:
US citizenship required
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or similar field, and a minimum of 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience
Proficient use of computer-aided design and analysis software, with SolidWorks strongly preferred
Experience developing high-precision electro-mechanical systems for various optical or photonic applications
Experience in the design of complex subsystems with photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements.
Understanding of mechatronic systems, including kinematics, dynamics, and control theory
Demonstrated experience in designing and integrating sensors, actuators, and control systems in mechatronic applications
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and software elements
Software skills in one or more of Matlab, Python, C/C++
Hands-on mindset, able to transition between CAD/analysis and real hardware
Desired:
A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or similar field
Proficiency in classical and/or modern control theory
Proficiency in programming and implementing embedded systems for real-time control of mechanical and electromechanical systems
This position is contingent on funding and may not be filled immediately. However, this position is representative of positions within CACI that are consistently available. Individuals who apply may also be considered for other positions at CACI.________________________________________________________________________________________
