Description
Our Government Services Group, one of our five (5) market focused business units, has opportunities for design professionals in our specialty design and engineering group. This group specializes in the design of special purpose glove boxes and the associated controls and auxiliary systems, precision furnaces, hot cells, custom pressure vessels and other one of a kind equipment.
+ Under the direction of the Mechanical Project Lead, you will be responsible for developing drawings and/or 3D models, while working on multi-disciplined design projects, and guiding junior-level designers
+ You will work on challenging assignments that include the design of Mechanical systems, specialty equipment, investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of mechanical design issues
+ Utilize 2D and 3D CAD modeling software tools to generate design packages
+ Act as the Mechanical design team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of an integrated design model
+ Coordinate and provide guidance to other designers and project team members to ensure a complete and timely design package
+ Independently plan and execute design deliverables, such as:
+ Representations of machine components or machine assemblies, including external and internal details of the assembled components
+ Auxiliary equipment panel layout and design involving pneumatic and / or fluid interfacing components, interconnecting tubing, fittings and supports, piping, fittings and supports, etc.
+ General arrangements (GAs) drawings
+ Piping isometrics, piping composites, pipe support drawings
+ Equipment location drawings
+ The opportunity to accompany and assist other designers and engineers in field walk downs and data gathering at client facilities
+ Develop your career via peer-learning through sharing of knowledge with other experienced designers by way of S&L’s systems of process and associated “Communities of Practice”
+ Provide guidance as a mentor in the development of less-experienced designers and drafters
Qualifications
Must be a U.S. Citizen; Dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
Essential skills and experience:
+ Associates Degree from an accredited institution in a related field or equivalent experience
+ 12+ years of professional experience converting the designs of engineers into technical drawings or equivalent education and experience
+ Progressive experience as a designer in a nuclear environment (i.e., DOE preferred, commercial, military, or related) and detailed physical design in the development of mechanical equipment, general arrangements, piping systems, HVAC, and / or other specialty equipment
+ Proficiency with design software tools to produce 2D and 3D CAD drawings and models using programs such as AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks or similar
+ Experience in the review of mechanical equipment, including outlines and interface points, and coordinating and developing the associated deliverables
+ Experience in reviewing design drawings created by others and the ability to interface and communicate with engineering and design teams of other disciplines
Valued but not required skills and experience:
+ CAD certificate
+ BIM modeling using Autodesk products (Revit) or equivalent
+ Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) experience

About This Business Unit
Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories. Specifically, we support the DOE Environmental Management Directorate as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories and sites. What does this mean?
