Job Summary

The Opportunity
I. Leadership and Management:
Lead and manage a team of bioinformaticians, providing mentorship and guidance. Works with senior leadership to establish goals and objectives including the definition of work products and timelines. May also participate in developing strategy and setting overall direction. Develop and implement strategic plans for the bioinformatics team. Ensure timely delivery of bioinformatics analyses and reports. Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment. Attracts, retains and develops high quality staff. Establishes and maintains a work environment conducive to high performance. Addresses the training and professional development needs of the staff.
II. Project Management:
Oversee the bioinformatics aspects of NGS projects from inception to completion. Coordinate with project managers, laboratory scientists, and other stakeholders. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
III. Bioinformatics Analysis:
Develop and implement bioinformatics pipelines and workflows and tools for NGS data analysis. Perform data quality control, alignment, variant calling, and annotation. Interpret and present results to scientific and non-scientific audiences. Design and apply novel computational methods/bioinformatics algorithms to aid in the analysis and interpretation of genetic data Analyze large molecular datasets of tumor sequencing data to help critically review and analyze the results of specimen testing, working closely with faculty and staff to troubleshoot problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies. Develop and validate new data analysis software tools to enhance ability of faculty to interpret genetic data output.
IV. Research and Development:
Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in NGS technologies and bioinformatics methods. Identify and integrate new tools and technologies to improve data analysis capabilities. Lead research initiatives to develop novel bioinformatics approaches.
V. Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with cross-functional teams including molecular scientists, geneticists, clinicians, pathologists, oncologists and other clinical healthcare professionals. Communicate complex bioinformatics concepts and results to stakeholders. Prepare and present technical reports to all cross functional teams
VI. Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure all bioinformatics analyses and reporting comply with relevant regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, FDA). Develop and maintain documentation and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for clinical bioinformatics processes. Participate in audits and inspections to ensure regulatory compliance. Performs all other duties as assigned.


 

Qualifications

Qualifications

· Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related field.

· Minimum of 8 years of experience in bioinformatics, with a focus on NGS.

· Proven experience in managing and leading bioinformatics teams.

· Strong expertise in NGS data analysis, including experience with various sequencing technologies (e.g., Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore).

· Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and Perl.

· Experience with bioinformatics tools and databases (e.g., GATK, SAMtools, BWA, Ensembl, COSMIC).

· Knowledge of regulatory requirements for clinical genomics (e.g., CLIA, CAP, FDA).

· Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Skills, Abilities and Competencies

· Experience in oncology or precision medicine.

· Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical data integration.

· Knowledge of cloud computing and high-performance computingenvironments.

· Scripting using Python or Perl.

· Prior experience developing software in a CLIA regulated environment is preferred.

· SQL proficiency using MySQL and/or SqlServer, knowledge of NoSQL and other DBMS (e.g.,PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Apache CouchDB) a plus

· Familiarity with data engineering and workflow management platforms (e.g., Airflow,Argo)

· Ability to work with and manage large and heterogenous data sets

· Excellent skills for working with the Linux operating system and high-performance computing clusters (HPCC), including the LSF queueing system to undertake genomic analyses from assembly of NGS reads through subsequent analyses

· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts.

· Excellent communication and effective problem-solving skills; and ability to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, prioritize and manage a variety of tasks, and shift priorities rapidly.

· Ability to work in a highly collaborative and intellectually challenging environment

· Ability to rapidly assess, learn, and implement new technologies / services as new needs arise, as well as communicating use of those technologies

· Excellent attention to detail

· Proven track record of developing high-quality computational methods and tools in form of scientific publications or through successful participation in hackathons, challenges or open-source software projects
