Purpose
Reporting to the Director, Business Controls & Operational Risk in Private Banking Head Office, the Senior Manager, Business Risk Management, Operational Risk, leads the development, implementation, and oversight of risk management strategies across the Canadian Private Banking business. Ensures that Operational, regulatory and strategic risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated effectively working with the business and key partners to design controls and plans that protect the business, Bank, and clients. Contributes to the overall success of Private Banking in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures the business is operating within acceptable risk and all activities are aligned with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. The Senior Manager will work closely with key partners, including Legal, Fraud, Audit, Testing, Internal Controls, Compliance, as well as other Head Office teams.
What you will be doing:
Lead and execute risk assessments on behalf of Private Banking working with Internal Controls and other key partners, including but not limited to Risk & Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs), New Initiative Risk Assessments (NIRAs), and Reportable Compliance Issues (RCIs). Identify and document areas of risk for the business and develop controls and/or plans to mitigate the risks,
working with peers and partners to ensure policies and procedures and any required communication and training is created, updated and maintained on an ongoing basis. Work closely with key partners, including Legal, Internal Controls, Compliance, and other Head Office teams to obtain advise and counsel on business needs, ensuring the business is operating within acceptable risk parameters and meeting Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) regulatory requirements. Develop and maintain operational risk frameworks and oversee risk reviews, error investigations, and root cause analyses, working closely with key partners, including Fraud, Corporate Security, Internal Controls, Cybersecurity, Technology as required. Represent Private Banking on audit and testing engagements, including actioning of requests for information, documenting management self identified issues (MSIs), collaborating with internal audit, compliance, governance, Head Office, and leadership teams to ensure alignment, effective and timely resolution of identified issues, and documenting/responding with any required evidence or action plans. Monitor and proactively report on Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), trends, gaps, and risk appetite metrics, including developing and maintaining regular reporting at all levels of the business and advising leadership on emerging risks and mitigation strategies. Provide expert feedback on risk implications of major change initiatives and transformation projects, and drive innovation in control design and testing, including automation and data analytics. Lead regulatory initiatives end-to-end, ensuring understanding of impacts and risks to Private Banking and clients, collaborating with partners and peers to manage effective implementation and communication of required Champions a client focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge. Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk. Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions for Private Banking and maintain a sound knowledge and understanding of Private Banking’s policies and internal procedures and protocols. Contribute to unit planning and strategy discussions to meet unit business objectives and regulatory requirements, as well as representing the unit in critical projects and committees as assigned. Operate within the Bank’s risk appetite and conduct business and interactions with clients, employees, suppliers, and others in a legal and ethical manner that promotes integrity across the Bank. Support other work, including with Business Controls team, as required.
