Purpose of Job

This position involves the intersection of trading operations and financial analysis, ensuring the efficient management and reporting of financial activities associated with trading. The analyst plays a pivotal role in driving profitability, reducing risks, and optimizing financial strategies across trading portfolios

Key Accountabilities

Analyze financial data related to trading operations, including profit and loss statements, cost structures, and revenue streams.

Prepare detailed reports and forecasts to assess the financial performance of trading portfolios.

Present insights and recommendations to management to drive decision-making and improve performance.

Report to the VP SC M&S and Strategic Sourcing and Head Commodity Trading & Input Materials on the daily, monthly, budget, forecasted financial performance, or other ad-hoc requests.

Present and confirm the accuracy and completeness of SAP data to cost centre owners.

Prepare SAP journals to ensure correct cost allocation between GL accounts and cost centre's.

Prepare detail cost centre information to enable cost centre owners in preparing and managing their costs/budgets.

Prepare monthly analysis of cost centres to identify areas of concern to be addressed by cost centre owners/BU management.

Give guidance to cost centre owners in terms of budget and forecast trends and requirements

Develop budgets and financial forecasts for trading activities.

Prepare and analyses financial information received for budgets and forecasts.

Perform variance analysis of expenditure against budget, prior year and forecast.

Perform variance analysis for management and group reporting.

Variances on pricing and volumes reconciled and explained

Ensure strict controls over cash management including ensuring payments are made on time, letters of credit or other guarantees are issued when required, daily monitoring of transactions, working closely with the trading team, as well as reporting for group purposes. Maintain the accounting (in terms of relevant standards and Sasol Group Accounting Manual), perform analysis of transactions, accounting and reporting of hedge transactions (knowledge of hedge accounting required).

Preferable to have a good understanding of hedging and be able to explain in detail price and volume variances.

Evaluate completeness of monthly cost and create provisions were necessary.

Prepare monthly reconciliations/schedules for GL accounts under their control.

Gains/losses recorded and reconciled monthly for hedging activities.

Working capital management

Prepare the financial instruments and purchase commitment disclosure schedule at reporting periods.

Report to the Crude Oil Procurement Committee and Hedging Committee (including Sasol Oil Board) regarding hedging status and progress.

Tracking of financial and operating results against KPIs to be reported to Trading team.

Liaise with both internal and external auditors and ensure compliance to SOX and internal control.

Formal Education

University Bachelor's Degree OR BTech in a finance related field

CA(SA) would be an advantage 

Minimum Experience

6+ relevant years with added advantage for oil industry experience

SAP experience, advanced excel skills as well as Power BI knowledge will be an added advantage.
