Job DescriptionLead in-house lawyer position for all of Avery Dennison’s Latin America businesses, including commercial, operations, and support functions (mainly in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras). The successful candidate will serve as a proactive and strategic business partner to the Latin America leadership teams. This individual will provide guidance and leadership to enable the achievement of business goals by managing day-to-day legal matters, leading complex, high-impact legal projects, and successfully collaborating with colleagues in the Law Department. The candidate should have a practical business-oriented approach, be highly collaborative, resilient under pressure, and a strong leader with unwavering ethical standards.
Align and execute on the legal strategy in the region to enable and support businesses goals, mitigating risks and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Lead legal strategy and provide oversight for significant business transformation projects, including M&A, operational efficiency, and cross-divisional pilot programs.
Provide high-quality, practical, and strategic legal support to the Latin America business teams on a wide variety of commercial, legal, regulatory, and compliance matters, including drafting commercial contracts and managing commercial disputes; competition law; import/export matters; antibribery; ESG issues; marketing and advertising; product liability and compliance; EHS; and labor and employment.
Lead and manage litigation, including providing advice and strategy regarding potential and pending litigation, selecting and managing outside counsel, deciding litigation strategy, and resolving disputes pre-litigation or pre-trial.
Collaborate with other global law department members, including intellectual property lawyers and lawyers in other regions, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of legal services.
Champion and lead Law Department initiatives within Latin America, focusing on continuous improvement, legal technology, including AI adoption, litigation reduction, and budget management,
Have regular interaction with business clients to understand objectives, goals and strategies to gain knowledge for providing proactive and business-oriented legal advice.
Lead the regional compliance program by conducting annual risk assessments, being accountable for the status and execution of internal investigations and corrective actions, managing the attorney-led training calendar, and performing 'Cultural Audits' or compliance check-ins at key sites..
Actively support and lead diversity and inclusion initiatives, including sponsoring Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to foster an inclusive workplace culture.
Proactively train non-lawyers regarding the company’s legal and regulatory obligations, including practical guidance on how to comply with laws and policies.
Lead and develop direct reports by overseeing performance, providing mentorship, and creating development plans to prepare them for future opportunities and expand their exposure to regional and cross-divisional matters.
Create and maintain a positive working environment within the Law Department, cultivating an environment that supports diversity, inclusion, trust, and respect.
QualificationsQualified lawyer with a minimum of 8-10 years of experience. Significant law firm experience is preferred (especially with a multi-national firm), and in-house experience is a significant plus.
Deep understanding of Latin American legal and regulatory landscapes, including practical experience in different jurisdictions.
Post Graduate Degree in law required.
Fluency in English, Portuguese, and Spanish — it is essential for navigating the region, engaging with stakeholders, and leading effectively across countries.
Commercial contract and corporate law experience is required; experience in compliance related work (including conducting risk assessments and leading sensitive internal investigations from inception through the implementation of corrective actions) is required; litigation experience is a significant plus.
Business acumen is expected. Pragmatic, independent, pro-active, and collaborative, able to handle multiple matters simultaneously in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
Must be comfortable in a matrix organizational structure.
