We are looking for a dynamic Senior Legal Counsel to join our global legal team in a commercial role based in New York. This role will have the unique opportunity to work across a portfolio of globally recognized brands on everything from claims review to talent agreements to litigation alongside a passionate and engaged team of lawyers and cross-functional colleagues.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for providing day-to-day support to the company and its brand portfolio on legal matters pertaining to licensing, litigation, and the development, marketing and sale of its cosmetic, fragrance and skincare products.

 

This role will work closely as a business partner with the US-based global and local marketing and commercial teams. This position also requires working collaboratively with other lawyers in the different functions around the world, as well as cross-functionally (e.g., with Marketing, R&D, QA, Regulatory Affairs, Corporate Affairs, Procurement and Finance) within Coty to provide legal advice on a variety of matters. 

 

Your main focus:

Serve as a strategic, solutions-oriented partner to the marketing and sales teams in the US, while being a key resource on litigation matters.  Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts including talent, sponsorship, marketing, influencer, music, and agency agreements. Provide high quality legal advice and counsel in a timely manner to a wide array of business and operational colleagues on sales, regulatory, claims substantiation, product labeling, marketing and advertising, intellectual property, social media, sweepstakes, and litigation matters. Assist with US litigation, arbitration, mediation, and NAD matters, including those related to talc and other ingredients, general product liability claims, false advertising, intellectual property, contract breach, and license-related topics. Manage and work with outside counsel on a variety of matters including claims substantiation, risk assessment, regulatory updates, and litigation.

 QUALIFICATIONS

 

We’d love to see candidates who have:

 

Essential:

Licensed attorney in New York 4-6 years’ legal experience, including experience in the luxury, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, or consumer goods sector, inclusive of time at a well-regarded law firm and in-house at a company. Strong marketing law experience with a solid background in negotiating commercial contracts, supporting litigation efforts, and reviewing advertising claims.

 

Desirable:

Ability to work on multiple matters at the same time while being a key team member to support various areas of the business Comfortable working independently, as well as with other legal team members and cross-functional teams Takes responsibility for the quality of all deliverables and is proactive in developing multiple skills Outstanding written and verbal communication skills geared toward senior business stakeholders inside and outside of the organization. High level of mental agility: ability to think strategically and ‘connect the dots’, get to the essence of issues fast, can help others think things through, and capable of analyzing complex legal and policy issues from a commercial perspective.

Base Salary Range: $175,000-$185,000 + bonus Health, dental, vision and disability insurance; 401(k) with generous employer match; paid time off, offices closed between Christmas and New Year’s, and up to 7 Summer Fridays; Parental leave; Tuition reimbursement; Hybrid work arrangements.
