Senior Industrial Designer Products
Overview We are seeking a full-time Senior Industrial Designer - Products in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for handling and leading the conceptualization with ownership and development of new products having higher than average level of difficulty, complexity, and for which few precedents exist. Essential Functions Serves in leadership capacity to take ownership, strategize, identify resource needs, plan/manage major projects with multiple designers including prioritizing tasks, assigning responsibilities to other designers, prototype specialists and contractors Takes ownership in ensuring all product designs are completed on the expected timeline Provides reliable solutions to difficult problems spanning multiple groups or disciplines using sound design principles including articulating design issues and identification of reasons for particular design directions Initiates collaboration when necessary to close action items and resolve existing problems in a timely manner including leading conversations with partners with respect to industrial design decisions Collaborates/adds value in design reviews and communicates to teams in engineering and product managers to produce superior solutions Makes substantial contributions to determining feasibility of project goals and objectives Participates proactively in project kick-off meetings Partners with Industrial Design and business segment leadership to determine feature vision and visualize or communicate it to the team Works on problems that span multiple groups or disciplines in collaborations with stakeholders Leads conversations with business segment partners with respect to industrial design capability and advantages to improve current and future design solutions Serves as mentor to Industrial Designers 1 & 2 to develop their skills in freehand sketch, SolidWorks and design presentation skills Demonstrates understanding of requirements and limitations and applies out of the box thinking to projects Provides constructive criticism on product design concepts to improve design out come through out design development process Works closely with Prototype Specialists to ensure job requests are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with design specifications Works with contractors and suppliers to push the limitation of current manufacturing technologies to innovate future designs Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or related field AND a minimum of 6 years product design experience OR a minimum of 6 years work experience as an Industrial Designer at Garmin Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) Must demonstrate knowledge, education, experience and/or training necessary to use tools such as SolidWorks, Keyshot, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and Sketchbook Pro Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude, and work respectfully with others Demonstrated courage to drive innovation Demonstrated ability to autonomously generate and support pragmatic solutions that meet project timelines and high quality standards OTHER ATTRIBUTES PER AREA OF SPECIALIZATION: Automotive OEM Designer: Automotive and /or related vehicle design experience (school projects are acceptable, portfolio examples are required) Environmental, display, and tradeshow design experience (school projects are acceptable, portfolio examples are required) Critical thinking and advanced problem solving skills (portfolio and problem solving examples required) Research minded (a desire to better understand what motivates customers, as well as how people use technology) A love for design (automotive, interior, exterior, mechanical, form, shape, color, etc.) Aviation Designer: Aviation product and/or cockpit layout design experience (school projects are acceptable, portfolio examples are required) Critical thinking and advanced problem-solving skills (portfolio examples required) Consumer Automotive Designer: Consumer electronic product design experience (school projects are acceptable, portfolio examples are highly preferred) Demonstrated excellent hand sketching skills (Wacom Tablet experience preferred) Demonstrated ability to rapidly explore a wide variety of styling options (form, colors, finishes, materials, etc.) Great attention to detail Marine Designer: Demonstrated excellent hand sketching skills (Wacom Tablet experience preferred) Demonstrated ability to rapidly explore a wide variety of styling options (forms, colors, finishes, materials, etc.) Knowledge of water/marine based activities (fishing, boating, sailing, rafting, kayaking, paddling, surfing, etc.) Outdoor and Fitness Designer: Outdoor and/or fitness product design experience (school projects are acceptable, portfolio examples are highly preferred) Demonstrated excellent hand sketching skills (Wacom Tablet experience preferred) Demonstrated ability to rapidly explore a wide variety of styling options (forms, colors, finishes, materials, etc.) A love for outdoor and/or fitness activities (hiking, camping, climbing, hunting, running, cycling, paddling, etc.) Desired Qualifications Aviation Designer: Familiarity with avionics and/or aircraft certification processes Pilot certification or other aviation experience Garmin International is an equal
