Position Overview
This is a critical role in leading and scaling high-performing engineering teams to deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality SaaS solutions that support our Human Capital Management (HCM) platform. This role requires a hands-on technical leader with strong project execution skills, a focus on engineering best practices, and the ability to align technical initiatives with business objectives. The Senior Manager will be responsible for driving team performance, improving development processes, and ensuring successful product delivery while collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders across Product, Security, and Go-To-Market teams. This role requires a balance of technical expertise, leadership, and business acumen.

+ Experience monitoring and leading production environment monitoring and alerting in support of the overall customer experience
+ Evidence and clear examples of strong coordination and collaboration with Product Management to evolve your SDLC processes to optimize productivity, efficiency, and quality of deliverables
+ Comfortable leading multiple teams responsible for a domain with multiple dependencies or outcomes
+ Experience sharing best practices broadly across departments and categories within Product & Technology
+ Experience and evidence of growing and developing teams and team members from Associate Software Engineering to Staff Engineering roles
+ Evidence of improving overall latency, performance, saturation, and error logging in support of a product module
+ Experience and evidence that demonstrates a high Say vs Do ratio on quarterly and annual goals and deliverables
Responsibilities
+ Lead multiple engineering teams in building scalable, high-quality products and solutions aligned with business objectives
+ Drive execution with structured project management, ensuring clear strategies and timely delivery
+ Optimize work breakdowns, parallel workstreams, and risk mitigation to improve efficiency
+ Ensure accountability for milestones, proactively tracking progress and managing risks
+ Optimize engineering processes, streamline development workflows, release cycles, and cross-functional collaboration
+ Coach and mentor engineers and managers, fostering a high-performance culture of learning and innovation
+ Collaborate with Product, Security, and Business teams to align technical strategy with company goals and customer needs
+ Ensure security best practices and regulatory compliance in all development efforts
+ Manage resource planning and team capacity, ensuring efficient talent allocation and operational effectiveness
+ Leverage engineering metrics to drive continuous improvement in quality, velocity, and efficiency
+ Stay ahead of industry trends and drive innovation in technology, architecture, and development practices
+ Technical Leadership & Execution
+ Own and improve the health, scalability, and quality of your teams’ products
+ Drive the adoption of platforms and reusable patterns within Paylocity’s ecosystem.
+ Curate and refine a high-level technical roadmap for each product module
+ Identify and scale architecture and resources to support customer growth
+ Team Management & Development
+ Lead 2-3 teams of software engineers and software test engineers, supporting career growth and professional development
+ Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that prioritizes both high performance and well-being
+ Effective in leading leaders (engineering managers) through ambiguous situations
+ Ability to support and guide 2-3 teams through challenging situations while maintaining empathy and accountability
+ Ability to rally 2-3 engineering teams toward a common purpose, goal, and outcomes
+ Operational & Process Excellence
+ Drive accountability and efficiency by setting clear expectations and monitoring execution.
+ Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering effectiveness and product delivery.
+ Maintain quality deliveries that add incremental value to customers
+ Cross-Functional Collaboration
+ Partner closely with Product Management and UX to align on roadmap, priorities, and user needs.
+ Maintain productivity and efficiency during Product Management change management
+ Proactively maintain a 12-to-18-month healthy roadmap with Product Management and UX
+ Work with stakeholders to understand requirements, manage dependencies, and set technical direction
+ Advocate for engineering needs and technical debt management while balancing business priorities
Required Experience
+ Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field or equivalent experience
+ Minimum 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a Software Engineering Management role
+ Strong technical expertise in software architecture, system design, and engineering best practices
+ Experience leading and scaling high-performing engineering teams in a SaaS or enterprise software environment
+ Proven track record of mentoring and growing engineers across different levels
+ Ability to manage technical complexity and drive solutions that scale effectively
+ Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and testing frameworks
+ Strong technical background in software development, cloud platforms, DevOps, and scalable architecture
+ Experience with observability and large-scale zero-downtime deployments
+ Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to change, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment
+ Fluent written and verbal communication skills that enable collaboration with technical or business-centric peers
Preferred Experience
+ Prior experience in HR or Talent technology domains.
+ Relevant experience with Learning Management, Performance Management, or Compensation Management solutions and challenges is preferred
+ Prior experience with Azure, GCP, or AWS (Amazon Web Services)
+ Familiarity with modern frontend and backend technologies relevant to SaaS applications.
+ Experience in an organization prioritizing developer productivity, DevOps, and engineering enablement.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead teams working on products with multiple dependencies or complex integrations.
+ Experience with transitioning from legacy systems to platform solutions required
+ Completed professional development training during the past 2-3 years
+ Prior understanding of RESTful API design and development.
