This individual contributor position offers broad technical input and accountability, working closely with the Chief Engineer to oversee major technical product decisions. Your deep technical knowledge of engine engineering and best practices will be crucial in delivering products that meet customer needs for cost, performance, durability, reliability, and quality. As a Senior Engineering Fellow, you'll support the Product Manager in translating customer needs into programme targets and setting the technical and architectural vision for the product line. You'll guide the engineering team through set-based development to manage risk and ensure technical success, meeting program dates and cost and quality targets. Mentorship is a key aspect of this role, as you'll develop the next generation of engineers within the product group. You'll also build and leverage networks across Caterpillar and external stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, academia, and various internal teams. Your contributions will drive continuous improvement in the NPI engine development process, tools, techniques, and team capabilities, maximizing the effectiveness of current product support mechanisms. If you're passionate about engineering leadership and innovation, and ready to make a significant impact, we invite you to apply for the Senior Engineering Fellow position. **What You Will Do** + Ensure that the appropriate level of engineering rigour is applied to new product introduction projects and current product improvement activities. This includes both engineering content as well as applying engineering best practices to mitigate risks and maximise opportunities. + Lead early-stage new technology demonstration projects where you will be required to convert customer requirements established by the Product Manager and Product team into product concepts and solutions establishing value targets for all major systems as well as project timing. + Through set-based development, support the engineering team to select and develop the technologies that will be used in final production, being ultimately responsible for the technical success of the product, and as such, responsible for ensuring product development projects meet their program dates, cost objectives, and quality targets. + Mentor and develop the next generation of engineers within the product group. + In many instances, lead product design, process design, and research of products, components, or systems; accountable for other significant activities including product reliability and product support. + Play a significant role as a thought-leader in product strategy, play an active part in workforce planning, and work with customers to determine needs and resolve problems. + Build both internal and external networks that can be leveraged to achieve the objectives of this role and of the wider business. Including compatriots in other Caterpillar groups as well as external suppliers, universities, regulators, etc. + Ensure a long-range focus on business strategy and planning for technology, product families, and entire major processes and services; planning for future resources and developing capabilities in terms of people, technology and facilities; consciously establishing a culture encouraging innovation, partnering and collaborative relationships and a customer focus **Additional Information** + Some global travel + This role is based in the office 5 days per week **What You Will Have** Significant level of industry experience (internal and external) with clearly demonstrating progressively increasing levels of responsibility **Products and Services** : knowledge of major products and services and product and service groups; ability to apply knowledge of product and service appropriately to diverse situations. + Experience with Industry Product Development System (i.e. APQP, FMEA, etc.) + Deep product development expertise and in-depth product knowledge plus ever increasing skills in visioning, strategic planning and coaching and leading people as well as ability to integrate major operations, technologies, products and diverse strategies. **Effective Communications:** understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviours. + Excellent communicator and strategic thinker; technically credible, keeping abreast of technology changes while depending on staff for the technical depth and breadth; and needs a breadth of knowledge and experience including products, processes, design and evaluation, and organization vision, procedures and policies. **Technical Excellence:** knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges. + Deep technical expertise within engine and engine systems products groups, their applications, and their customers, as well as expert knowledge of the Caterpillar Product Development System (or equivalent). + External experiences across a range of industries will be beneficial in ensuring a customer-back mindset to product development and problem solving + Technical degree, with an advanced technical degree desired **Influencing Through Expertise** : knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization. + Understands the business and it’s impact on the customers’ business and needs, dealing with a global marketplace both in terms of customers and in terms of sourcing suppliers, production and talent. **Troubleshooting Technical Problems:** Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment. **Top candidates will also:** + Have comprehensive Caterpillar engine system experience + Have experience with end-customer applications + Benefit from external experience and insights into the future energy technologies, paths, and macro trends + Understand key insights relating to the adoption of alternative fuels and integration with electrification technologies + Build collaborative relationships across a matrix organization + Be a strategic thinker + Benefit from external work experience across industries or customer bases **About Caterpillar:** Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
