About the Role:
We have an exciting opportunity to support our Technology team as a Senior Engineer, Observability based in Shelton, CT. The Senior Engineer, Observability is responsible for implementing and managing monitoring solutions across Subway’s infrastructure and applications—including servers, networks, cloud services, databases, mobile apps, and web platforms. This role is responsible for the configuration, maintenance, and documentation of observability tools such as Dynatrace and SolarWinds. The engineer also partners with technology stakeholders through instrumentation planning, service reviews, and operational enablement to ensure monitoring solutions meet evolving business and technical needs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Design, configure, and maintain observability and alerting platforms such as Dynatrace, OpsGenie, AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, and Splunk. Responsibilities include instrumentation, dashboard creation, alerting configuration, anomaly detection, business events processing and creation, log pipeline configuration and analysis, synthetic and real user monitoring, and continuous improvement of monitoring coverage and quality. Guide and support the work of internal engineers and external consultants focused on observability. Establish priorities, ensure quality outcomes, and provide technical and process leadership across distributed teams. Collaborate with developers, architects, and platform teams to define observability strategies that align with business and operational goals. This includes integrating observability into CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code workflows and supporting business observability through end-to-end transaction tracing and event instrumentation. Develop, document, and maintain observability processes and response procedures, ensuring operational readiness through knowledge transfer, training, and enablement of technical teams. Review and tune alert configurations and response workflows in collaboration with stakeholders to improve signal quality, reduce noise, and enhance incident response effectiveness. Participate in service reviews to ensure observability coverage meets stakeholder needs. Perform proactive monitoring and incident response for production systems and applications observed through solutions including Dynatrace, SolarWinds, and other monitoring platforms.
Qualifications (some examples listed below):
Bachelors Degree Computer Science or related filed. 6+ years related technical experience. Observability Expertise: Expert in Dynatrace with skills in distributed tracing, logging, business events, metrics, DQL, OpenPipeline, dashboarding, alerting, anomaly detection, and proactive monitoring. Familiarity with additional observability tools such as SolarWinds, Azure Monitor, AWS CloudWatch, and Splunk. Leadership Experience: Proven experience leading technical teams in the design, implementation, and support of observability solutions. Ability to mentor team members, delegate responsibilities, and align team efforts with organizational goals. Collaboration & Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively across technical teams, development groups, and architecture stakeholders. Cloud Proficiency: Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure services to support instrumentation and management of observability solutions for cloud-hosted applications and services. Training & Enablement: Capable of coaching and training internal teams on observability best practices and Dynatrace implementation. Process Orientation: Skilled in developing, documenting, and improving observability-related processes and procedures. Analytical Thinking: Excellent analytical skills with the ability to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in complex datasets. Mindset & Approach: Naturally curious and committed to continuous learning and improvement. Proactive in identifying opportunities for optimization and innovation in monitoring strategies. Technical Skills: Proficient in Windows and Linux environments, experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell and Bash. Skilled in administering Dynatrace and SolarWinds platforms, including integration with AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, OpsGenie, and Splunk. Working knowledge of SNMP, WMI, ICMP, NetFlow, and REST APIs for data collection and integration.
