Job Overview:

This leadership position functions to provide strategic, operational and thought leadership to support patient safety and quality initiatives and sustainability of high reliability principles at Childrens Specialized Hospital,

The role provides direction and coordination to develop and implement evidence based programs and services that produce measurable improvements in processes and practices that affect patient safety and support high reliability across the organization,

This role reports directly to the Vice President, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer and is a critical member of the Nursing Executive Committee for CSH,

Qualifications:

Formal Education and Job Related ExperienceBachelor of Science in Nursing,Masters Degree in Nursing or related field required,PhD in Nursing or DNP preferredExperience in leading teams through process improvement and change initiativesIn depth knowledge of evidence based practice, performance improvement and patient safety conceptsAbility to motivate and sustain interest in improving patient safety and clinical qualityIn depth knowledge of nursing operations, professional practice models and standards, and regulatory standardsSignificant experience in educational program development, including curriculum and competency developmentMinimum of 5 to 7 years of progressive management experience, preferably in pediatric healthcareEffective verbal and written communication presentation skillsEffective organizational, problem solving and time management skillsStrong leadership skillsAdept with electronic medical records and reviewProven track record of working with all levels of staffProject management experienceAbility to manage several projects and processes simultaneously and meet deadlinesProficient in PowerPoint, Word, internet literature searches, use of audiovisual equipment and development of multimedia educational program development

Certification

Certified Professional in Patient Safety, CPPS, certification preferred

License

Current RN Licensure in the state of NJEducation and Experience Additional CommentsPrevious pediatric clinical experience strongly desired

Essential Functions

Directs and coordinates patient safety activities across the organization as assigned, including but not limited to, quality, compliance, and performance audits, surveillance activities, prospective risk assessments and analyses and intensive analysesMentors and coaches other leaders and managers in conducting prospective risk and intensive analyses, action planning, monitoring and auditingConducts RCAs to investigate occurrences, identifying proximate causes, developing root causes and drafting corrective action plans for discussion with key stakeholdersServes as a change agent develops, coaches and facilitates complex process optimization projects as assigned, in order to achieve measurable progress to achieve strategic prioritiesProvides thought leadership and recommendations for improving workflows, team structures and system configurationsRounds with staff and leaders in a continual pursuit of patient safety improvement opportunitiesEstablishes and maintains the objectives and strategy for quality and patient safety professionals and team members in order to effectively contribute to executing the overarching CSH strategic planParticipates in reporting and communication of quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, quality and patient safety awareness and safety culture survey administrationCoordinates tracking and reporting of clinical outcomes of assigned clinical indicators and quality improvement initiatives e,g,National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators and other registries and databasesFacilitates communications between nursing staff, leadership, and shared governance councils to explore solutions and select best alternatives for evidence based clinical practicesServe as the coordinator for activities related to designations encompassing nursing excellence e,g,Magnet, Pathways to ExcellenceServes as a member of the Nursing Executive Committee providing strategic input on initiatives related to nursing excellence, quality, safety and professional nursing practiceWorks with organization stakeholders to define existing and new processes and recommend solutions and improvements as they affect accreditation and or regulatory requirementsServes as a resource for leaders and staff on patient safety and quality improvement activities, education and use of patient safety and high reliability toolsSupports the work of the Infection Preventionist and CSH infection surveillance activities as assignedActs as leader for HRO and local implementation of HRO principles and culture adherenceAs an HRO leader, participates and leads as appropriate initiatives to improve the patient experienceDirects the implementation of programs by evaluating the quality of services provided through gap analyses process improvement activities, event reporting, patient safety standards, etc,, review of reports e,g,Press Ganey, Joint Commission surveys, Sentinel Event reports, satisfaction surveys, etc, and risk assessmentsFosters the use of systematic evaluative research data with regard to process and performance improvement to facilitate implementation of an evidence based practice across the organizationIdentifies and assists staff across the organization in finding opportunities to improve patient care workflow, work processes and quality, and then works collaboratively to implement and monitor improvementsParticipates and coordinates in High Reliability activities as directed, including but not limited to overseeing the Safety Coach program and mentoring Safety Coaches in their role, the development and implementation of unit based safety huddles, error prevention tool refresh, among othersOversees the planning and implementation of internal quality fairs and submission of abstracts to external quality and safety conferences
