Senior Developer Experience Engineer 

As a Senior Developer Experience Engineer at CoverMyMeds, you'll play a dual role supporting the launch and evolution of a new foundational healthcare technology platform. This product is designed to streamline medication access workflows across the healthcare ecosystem. You’ll solve operational challenges using modern software engineering practices while building developer tooling and automation that accelerate our cloud-native modernization goals. This unique position blends traditional Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) responsibilities with a focus on enhancing developer experience through scalable technology patterns and healthcare-compliant development practices. 

 
 

Role Positioning 

You’ll report directly to an engineering director and work closely with the product engineering team responsible for this new platform. You’ll serve as a bridge between platform capabilities developed by our infrastructure teams and the specific needs of building a business-critical healthcare solution. This role offers the opportunity to shape how developers build healthcare technology at scale while gaining deep expertise in regulated environments and FHIR-based interoperability.

What You’ll Do 

You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the delivery and reliability of a new healthcare platform, while also driving improvements in developer experience and platform modernization: 

SRE Responsibilities 

Ensure application performance stays within defined SLOs for healthcare-critical workflows 

Automate operational tasks and identify process gaps specific to healthcare compliance requirements (SOX, SOC2, HIPAA) 

Manage releases and build continuous deployment pipelines for FHIR-based services and federated GraphQL APIs 

Implement observability and monitoring solutions tailored to healthcare data flows and patient-facing workflows 

Provide operational guidance and expertise to product engineering team members 

 

Developer Experience & Platform Modernization 

Develop template Helm charts and Git repositories that accelerate adoption of federated APIs, event-driven architecture, and FHIR interoperability patterns 

Build tooling and automation that reduce friction for developers adopting cloud-native solutions focused on horizontal scaling and micro-frontends 

Create self-service developer onboarding automation and CI/CD workflows that reduce compliance toil 

Partner with platform teams to identify product-specific cloud-native capabilities and influence platform roadmap 

Implement developer productivity measurement using frameworks like Google's HEART methodology 

Develop Backstage plugins and internal tools that improve developer workflows and reduce time-to-productivity 

 
 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelors in computer science, engineering, or another STEM field or equivalent experience and 

typically requires 7+ years of relevant experience. 

 

Critical Skills 

5+ years' experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure 

3+ years' experience in a titled Senior Developer/Engineer role 

3+ years of experience developing APIs (REST and GraphQL) and authentication systems (OAuth2, JWT, OpenID) 

Proficient in Node.js and TypeScript development for building developer tooling and automation 

Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Helm charts) and GitHub Actions 

Knowledge of developer platform tools like Backstage and internal tooling development 

Understanding of healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR) and compliance requirements preferred 

Experience with event-driven architectures and federated API patterns 

 

Preferred Skills 

Able to navigate ambiguity between traditional SRE work and developer experience priorities 

Ability to analyze complex healthcare systems with attention to compliance and security requirements 

Understands the implications of platform decisions on both operational reliability and developer productivity 

Proactively shares information to keep product teams, platform teams, and leadership aligned on progress and blockers 

 

Senior-Level Traits 

Positively influence how development teams organize and execute their work through better tooling and automation 

Demonstrate leadership in driving modernization and cloud-native adoption 

Strong grasp on healthcare technology risks and how to minimize them through platform engineering

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$126,000 - $210,000
