The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Counsel – Litigation & Disputes to lead and manage complex litigation and dispute resolution matters across the company's global operations. The ideal candidate will have at least 6 years of legal experience, including a strong background in construction disputes, and will provide strategic legal advice on pre-litigation and litigation matters, including contract disputes, project claims, regulatory inquiries, and alternative dispute resolution. 

The Team

Black & Veatch’s Business Enablement consists of critical groups that help enable the organizations people, projects, and businesses to be as successful as possible. Functions in this group include Digital & Information Technology, Global Finance, Global Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Government Affairs and Real Estate and Building Services.

Key Responsibilities Represent the company in managing litigation, arbitration, mediation, and other dispute resolution matters, both domestically and internationally.  Serve as the key legal advisor on construction-related disputes, including claims for delay, disruption, defective work, change orders, and cost overruns.  Oversee and manage outside counsel in complex litigation and arbitration matters to ensure alignment with business objectives and cost efficiency.  Work closely with project management, commercial, and risk teams to proactively identify and mitigate legal risks on projects.  Support pre-dispute strategy and negotiations, including drafting of settlement agreements, waivers, and dispute resolution clauses.  Participate in internal investigations and respond to regulatory or governmental inquiries as needed.  Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and deliver training on legal and risk issues related to construction projects.  Monitor developments in relevant laws and regulations and communicate impacts to the business.  Preferred Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (or equivalent international qualification).  Minimum of 6 years of relevant legal experience, with a strong focus on construction litigation or EPC project disputes, and top tier law firm training and experience is a plus.  Experience with major arbitration forums (e.g., ICC, LCIA, AAA/ICDR) and dispute boards is highly desirable.  In-depth knowledge of construction law, contract law, and dispute resolution practices.  Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters and work effectively with senior executives, project teams, and external counsel.  Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.  Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.  Minimum Qualifications Law degree required Licensed to practice law in at least 1 jurisdiction All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
