What is the opportunity?
The Enterprise Legal Advisory Team is staffing a Senior Counsel role to provide advice on Intellectual Property (“IP”) matters to the enterprise. In this role, the successful candidate will provide sound legal advice to RBC on strategic priorities and initiatives relating to IP, specifically with respect to patents, copyright, trade secrets and open source.
What will you do?
Identify, assess and manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risk relating to the enterprise’s IPReview and advise on a range of IP matters involving patents, copyright, trade secrets and open sourceProvide sound, solution-oriented legal advice to help structure IP collaborations, acquisitions and other licensing arrangementsDraft and negotiate third party agreements relating to projects and initiatives involving IP, including academic agreementsCreate awareness across the enterprise of the patent strategy and promote information about patent protection, the patenting process and the importance of protecting innovationManage the cost and performance of external counsel as required to support patent filings and other IP projectsAssist litigation counsel on disputes or litigation impacting RBC that relate to IP, particularly with respect to patent and copyright infringementSupport corporate communications in reviewing press releases and public-facing comments related to patents and innovationMonitor legal, regulatory and market developments and trends relating to IPWhat do you need to succeed?
Must-have
JD/LLB from a recognized law schoolMember in good standing of a law society or bar association5+ years of relevant experience in private practice and/or in-house at a financial institutionExperience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment and balancing competing work demands, prioritizing and being responsive to business imperativesNice-to-have
