The opportunity
The Senior CAD Designer (Mechanical) is responsible for developing, managing, and delivering high-quality 2D/3D CAD models and drawings. This role supports the mechanical discipline of the Energy and Utilities business unit, with a focus on supporting efficient project delivery of linear and vertical water infrastructure. Operating under the supervision of the Digital Engineering Lead, this role ensures the delivery of high-quality documentation and our implementation of industry best practice in digital engineering. This position maybe located in either Auckland NZ, Nelson NZ or the Christchurch NZ region. The successful incumbent will envision themselves doing tasks such as:
What you’ll do
Create, update, and maintain 2D/3D models and drawings in Autodesk Plant 3D
Generate smart P&IDs, layouts, plan sheets, and pipe models in alignment with industry best practice and company standards
Liaise with engineers, surveyors, and other stakeholders to ensure coordinated delivery
Participate in internal and external design reviews, incorporating feedback into deliverables
Visit project sites to collect data, verify existing conditions, and inform design work
Participate in digital initiatives including workflow improvements, automation scripts, and visualisation outputs
Maintain accurate drawing registers, file naming, and metadata in accordance with digital protocols
Ensure all work complies with relevant standards, templates, and quality assurance procedures

What we’re looking for
Diploma of Technology or Engineering
Familiarity with GIS, point cloud data, and integration of survey inputs
Proficiency in Autodesk Plant 3D (PIDs, equipment, piping, plant layouts) essential10 years minimum years of work experience in a similar mechanical design role within utilities or infrastructure
Excellent leadership ability
Willingness to learn and develop technical capabilities
