Job DescriptionThe Senior Backend Engineer is responsible for the technical delivery of their scrum team. This
includes ensuring a high standard of work, in line with our scalability and performance goals.
Key responsibilities:
● Design features by working closely with Product and customers to translate real-world
problems into product and technical specifications, ensuring that no development work is
started until this is done to a high level of quality.
● Mentor the team to ensure that everyone knows what they are doing, providing technical
expertise as-and-when needed.
● Lead technology improvements by using data to identify areas of the product which are
under-performing, designing the solutions, advocating for the changes, and overseeing their
implementation.
● Contribute to process improvements by finding bottlenecks or pain-points in the team, and
proposing solutions.
● Work closely with the analytics and blockchain teams to ensure that changes made to the
backend services will not break integrations with their services; DevOps to deploy new services
into different environments; and QA to maintain a high level of software quality.
● Write software, fix bugs, perform code reviews, and generally keep doing development work. It
is vital that the team lead is close to the coal-face.
● Extensive Python experience, working with Cloud-based technologies
● Demonstrable experience designing and building APIs.
● Experience with Python web frameworks.
● Proven ability in leadership skills.
● Rust is a lovely-to-have.
Preferred skills and knowledge:
● Excellent knowledge of Python.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
● Strong understanding of types and type systems, and skills in mypy, Rust, or
other typed languages.
● Strong understanding of Linux and Docker.
● Well-versed in best-practice engineering – version control systems, code
reviews, CI/CD pipelines, etc.
● Good understanding of PostgreSQL, or other relational databases.
● Good understanding of monitoring and logging tools.
● Awareness of Kubernetes.
