Senior Automation Engineer

SENIOR AUTOMATION ENGINEER OBJECTIVE

We are seeking an experienced Senior Automation Engineer to lead complex industrial automation initiatives and provide technical guidance across our engineering organization. This leadership role combines strategic oversight of large-scale projects with hands-on execution of specialized automation solutions, while developing the next generation of automation professionals through mentorship and technical direction.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as subject matter expert (SME) for automation and control systems, providing high-level technical guidance to internal teams and clients Lead comprehensive automation projects from conceptual design through final commissioning and client acceptance Develop automation scope definitions and technical approaches for proposal development and business growth initiatives Direct and coordinate automation activities across multidisciplinary engineering teams including electrical design, instrumentation, and IT departments Design and deploy sophisticated industrial control architectures including PLCs, DCS, HMI, SCADA, and related automation platforms Execute complex programming tasks on specialized projects requiring senior-level expertise Perform advanced troubleshooting and system optimization for critical industrial processes Conduct online programming modifications and system transfers on live operational systems Provide direct technical oversight and management of junior and mid-level automation engineers Create detailed task assignments and project work breakdown structures for engineering teams Deliver comprehensive training programs in programming methodologies, troubleshooting techniques, and client engagement strategies Establish engineering standards and best practices to ensure consistent quality across all deliverables Lead client interactions during plant floor activities, technical meetings, and project milestone reviews Manage customer expectations and communications throughout project lifecycle Participate in site assessments, technical consultations, and proposal presentations for new business opportunities Serve as primary automation representative for high-profile client relationships across diverse industrial sectors Oversee automation project budgets, schedules, and scope management activities Identify and communicate scope changes to project management teams Ensure team task completion within established budgets and timeline constraints Coordinate field commissioning activities and manage associated overtime requirements REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Controls, Chemical, or related discipline) with 10+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience Expert-level proficiency with multiple industrial automation platforms and programming environments Demonstrated mastery of P&ID interpretation, electrical schematic analysis, and control system design principles Extensive field experience with startup, commissioning, and advanced troubleshooting activities Proven capability with online programming, system modifications, and live process interventions Minimum 5+ years of technical leadership experience managing automation engineering teams Strong project management skills with demonstrated success delivering complex projects on time and within budget Experience developing and implementing engineering processes, standards, and quality procedures Proven ability to identify and mitigate project risks while maintaining stakeholder confidence Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities for technical documentation, proposals, and executive presentations Strong business acumen with experience in cost estimation, proposal development, and client relationship management Demonstrated success working with OEMs, end users, EPC contractors, and industrial clients across multiple sectors Professional presence suitable for senior-level client interactions and business development activities Strategic thinking capabilities balanced with attention to technical details Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to synthesize complex technical information Commitment to safety protocols and adherence to health, safety, and environmental policies Flexibility to travel up to 20% for site visits, commissioning activities, and client engagements Willingness to work overtime during critical project phases (compensated at standard hourly rates)
