Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025. MSNBC is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Assignment Editor to join our news division. This role requires a leader with sharp editorial instincts, strong logistical coordination skills, and the ability to manage complex, fast-moving stories across platforms. The Senior Assignment Editor plays a critical role in newsgathering operations and ensures consistent collaboration with all MSNBC platforms.  Key Responsibilities:  + Collaborate across all MSNBC News platforms and units to ensure effective and cohesive newsgathering efforts  + Proactively identify, pitch, and advocate for compelling stories for both broadcast and digital platforms  + Communicate breaking news and editorial updates to programs, digital and station groups via Slack  + Work closely with affiliate stations to source video content, packages, and obtain editorial guidance  + Coordinate coverage and logistics of breaking and ongoing news stories across the MSNBC News division + Assign appropriate reporters and producers to support platform needs  + Oversee logistics to meet the technical, operational, and ENG (Electronic News Gathering) needs of field teams  + Book camera crews for field teams  + Source and distribute AP and Reuters video content within Slack threads  + In urgent breaking news situations, coordinate with the travel desk to expedite field deployment  + Prioritize bringing in live feeds from partnered stations; use Facebook only as a last resort  + Edit and clip video content from various sources, including pool feeds, agency footage, and affiliate video  + Ensure any editorial outreach to a station includes requesting video  + Visually verify UGC video as rights and clearances for MSNBC  + Travel to breaking news events to lead and coordinate on-site coverage efforts  + Tailored duties based on assigned shifts and areas of focus:  Dayside Shifts:   + Assign reporters, journalist and camera crews to day-of-air and evening platform coverage  + Book security and manage logistics  + Participate in editorial and production planning calls  Evening Shifts:  + Fulfill next-day assignment requests for morning platforms  + Prepare and circulate editorial notes on ongoing coverage and lookahead  Overnight Shifts:  + Monitor for breaking news across bureaus and identify new story leads  + Build overnight editorial notes and coordinate with other shifts for continuity  + 5+ years of experience in a newsroom or newsgathering operation  + Strong editorial judgment and decision-making skills under pressure  + Excellent communication, coordination, and interpersonal abilities  + Proficiency in newsroom systems, Slack, and digital communication platforms  + Proven ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams  + Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including overnights and weekends  + Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
