Job SummaryThe Senior Accounting Analyst – GU&I Accounting & Reporting is responsible for reporting, accounting, aggregation, and financial/economic analysis in the Accounting & Reporting group of the Gas Utilities & Infrastructure segment, including Piedmont Natural Gas, Duke Energy Midwest Gas in KY and OH, and various Equity Method Investments within the segment (Pipelines and Storage assets).
The analyst will work closely with teammates, peers, and management on various accounting and reporting activities including preparation of GU&I segment internal and external reporting, monthly journal entry preparation, account reconciliations, complex analysis and assessments of equity investments, and financial statement analysis. The analyst will interact frequently with various groups to support these activities and other transactions and decisions. The position will analyze and research ad-hoc requests, develop reporting, and effectively prepare presentations for management review and decision making. This position works closely with internal teams within the overall Controller’s organization as well as Regulated Utility Gas Operations Finance, Gas Investment and Strategic Planning, Load Forecasting and others. Effective communication and relationship building are crucial to succeed in this role. Responsibilities of this role also include leading projects, setting priorities, and special projects as needed. The position requires strong technical knowledge and research capabilities to ensure compliance with GAAP and FERC.
This is the fourth level of the financial analysis classification hierarchy. Employees at this level are expected to solve complex problems and interpret internal or external business issues and recommend solutions. Employee may also regularly lead projects. Incumbents provide leadership (advising and providing direction) to others in financial areas of specialization and may coordinate daily work activities and review the work of other teammates. Employee works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations. Incumbent has specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise.
Responsibilities
Prepare GU&I segment reporting including the Financial Reporting Summary (FRS) and support
Work with others to develop explanations of the GU&I results and drivers
Perform accounting and reporting for GU&I segment Equity Method Investments including impairment assessments as needed
Cash flow preparation
Journal entry and account reconciliation preparation and review
Assist with SOX documentation and control updates and monitoring
Primary contact for SEC and other corporate reporting
Coordination of data to support quarterly / annual Investor Relations presentations
Provide review and support to other team members
Assist with data requests from SEC reporting, internal and external auditors and other customers
Prepare schedules used for SEC financials
Prepare and review financial schedules that support internal and external reporting
Provide accounting support as needed for non-routine transactions as well as large strategic initiatives
Understand and maintain proper business and financial processes to ensure adherence to internal controls and policies
Identify process improvements and assist in implementation to produce efficiencies at all stages of the accounting process
Basic/Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree with major in Accounting/Finance or related discipline
Three (3) plus years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree
Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures
Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft, OneStream, etc.)
Experience using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word and Power Point
Desired QualificationsCPA or working toward CPA
Advanced degree, preferably in Accounting
Six (6) years or more of professional work related experience
Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures
Previous experience in utility and regulatory accounting environment
Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills
Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, including data analytics
Demonstrated ability to effectively perform at the experienced analyst level, including ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adhere to strict deadlines and schedules
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and foster good relationships with teammates and business partners
Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to efficiently multi-task within tight deadlines
Public accounting or auditing experience
Working ConditionsHybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
Some overtime is likely to occur but intended to be infrequent and align with peak workloads on the quarters and during the year-end close process.
