Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Accountant to lead complex accounting functions, support high-level financial analysis, and act as a resource for junior staff. This role partners with the VP of Finance to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. You will play a key role in special projects, process improvement initiatives, and may oversee specific financial programs or grants. This position supports a nonprofit agency dedicated to serving children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Responsibilities
+ Develop and assess intricate financial entries and account reconciliations.
+ Oversee the financial close process at both monthly and annual intervals.
+ Contribute to the planning and monitoring of grant budgets, ensuring adherence to funding guidelines.
+ Interpret and communicate financial insights to internal teams and leadership.
+ Facilitate external financial reviews, including audits and regulatory reporting.
+ Act as a mentor and point of reference for junior accounting staff.
+ Partner with various departments to guide budget planning and expenditure control.
+ Spearhead or support strategic initiatives led by the VP of Finance, such as system enhancements, operational reviews, and financial forecasting.
+ Carry out additional tasks as directed by senior leadership.
Essential Skills
+ Proficient in advanced accounting, reconciliations, forecasting, and variance analysis.
+ Strong Excel and financial systems skills; quick to adapt to new technologies.
+ Experienced in managing accounting projects and cross-functional initiatives.
+ Analytical problem-solver with sound decision-making abilities.
+ Clear communicator of financial data to diverse audiences.
+ Full-cycle accounting knowledge, including nonprofit and grant accounting.
+ Familiar with internal controls, audit preparation, and regulatory compliance (GAAP, IRS, funder rules).
+ Maintains confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA standards.
+ Leads financial processes and mentors junior staff.
+ Identifies process improvements and supports automation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Over 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within the nonprofit sector.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or Master’s degree preferred.
+ Strong command of GAAP and fund accounting methodologies.
+ Advanced proficiency in Excel and familiarity with financial systems such as MIP and Microx.
+ Proven ability to interpret complex financial data and deliver clear, actionable analysis.
+ Skilled in managing multiple priorities while consistently meeting deadlines.
+ Effective communicator with a collaborative, solution-oriented mindset.
+ High attention to detail and accuracy in all financial reporting and documentation.
+ Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
Work Environment
This position requires onsite work every day in an office setting. The role involves working with software such as MIP, commonly used by nonprofits. The typical work hours are from 7:30/8:30 AM to 4:00/5:00 PM. The position offers the opportunity for growth and a long-term role within the organization.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
