This position primarily works 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM on a Panama rotating schedule—including weekends and holidays—with the expectation of full shift availability. As a Security Officer, you’ll work 12-hour shifts, 7 days per 14-day pay period, providing a visible and reassuring presence across our hospital and adjacent properties.
In this role, you’ll work closely with fellow officers across four security posts, as well as hospital departments such as the Emergency Department (ED) and Inpatient Mental Health (IPMH) units. You’ll patrol UPMC facilities, monitor alarms, respond to incidents, and provide excellent customer service—all while maintaining a secure and welcoming environment.
To be considered, candidates must hold a valid New York State Driver’s License. A New York State Security Guard Card is highly preferred.

In this role, there will be the opportunity to-
+ Staff fixed posts to monitor ingress and egress to secured areas
+ Provide customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff to maintain a safe and secure environment.
+ Inspect incoming and outgoing parcels as necessary to prevent theft.
+ Respond to and resolve problems, disputes, and unusual circumstances as necessary.
+ Maintain required certifications and licensing.
+ Assist with traffic control and vehicle assists.
+ Transport deceased to morgue and release bodies from morgue.
+ Monitor security, fire, and environmental alarms, respond to alarms and assist when needed.
+ Establish a uniformed security presence by patrolling UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds, and associated areas to deter criminal activity, document activities, and contact other appropriate law enforcement when necessary.
+ Operate UPMC vehicles in accordance with the rules and regulations of all applicable state and local motor vehicle laws.
+ Conduct patient escorts and stand-by details.
+ Complete all mandatory training programs per departmental guidelines.
+ Report and document incidents, suspicious activities, and hazards.
Required:
+ Valid NYS Driver's License.
+ High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential UPMC information.
+ Must possess strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to effectively interact, communicate, and diffuse potential combative situations with persons from all walks of life.
+ Psychological fitness required to deal with stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations.
+ Physical fitness requirements to deal with typical physical demands that require full body motion and physical strength and stamina sufficient to respond to crisis interventions and medical emergencies.
+ Be able to effectively communicate both orally and in written format.
+ Good interpersonal skills; able to deal with stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations.
+ All applicants will be subject to a thorough background and criminal record check.
+ Must be available for all shifts.
+ Officers are required to wear a bullet proof vest.
+ Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement should consult the applicable collective bargaining for specific requirements.
Preferred:
+ High School diploma or equivalent.
+ NYS Security Guard Card.
+ Previous military, security, or criminal justice education or experience.
**Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
+ New York Security Guard License under Article 7A of the General Business Laws Federal Bureau of Investigation
+ Criminal History Record Clearance every 60 months
+ Valid Driver's License
+ Must meet audio standards
+ Must meet visual standards
+ Successfully pass UPMC Physical Fitness Standard prior to hire.
+ Required Personality Test
+ Unarmed NY Certification to be obtained within 90 days of hire
+ NYMR (New York Mandated Reporter) to be obtained within 90 days of hire
+ NYSCR (New York Statewide Central Registry) to be completed within 5 days of hire
+ CCMC to be obtained within 60 days of hire
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
+ Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
+ Driver's License
