Scientific Programmer
Are you passionate about using code to solve real-world environmental challenges? Weyerhaeuser’s Advanced Forestry Systems (AFS) team is looking for a curious and driven Scientific Programmer to help shape the future of sustainable forestry. In this role, you’ll work on a wide range of innovative projects—from developing cloud-based data pipelines and web applications to applying geospatial analytics and machine learning in forestry, remote sensing, and wood science. Join a collaborative team committed to delivering world-class data and analytical tools that support the optimal management of millions of acres of forestland. *Key Functions:* * Design, develop, and maintain large-scale data workflows across multiple platforms, including AWS, to process complex datasets such as LiDAR, satellite imagery, and drone data. * Build and implement advanced analytical models and decision support tools using SQL Server, Postgres, and other database technologies. * Develop distributed data pipelines in AWS to automate the generation and processing of forest inventory products, leveraging CI/CD practices. * Create and support systems that organize, validate, and analyze forest data, including tools for growth modeling, log processing optimization, and harvest planning. * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to communicate technical concepts and project outcomes to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across geographic locations. * Stay current with advancements in geospatial modeling, programming, data engineering, and forest biometrics to continuously improve tools and methodologies. * Contribute to a mission-driven team focused on delivering reliable, cost-effective forest information to support sustainable land and timber management. * Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, geospatial analysis, biometrics, silviculture, biology, or a related field preferred. * Proficiency in at least one interpreted language (e.g., Python or R) and one compiled language (e.g., C or C#). * Experience working with large databases such as MS SQL Server or Postgres; familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS is a plus. * Strong interest in learning and applying new technologies to improve forestry data systems and decision-making tools. * Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with diverse technical and non-technical teams. * Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and contributing to a culture of safety and accountability. *Compensation:* This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $88,910 - $133,506 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 7% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target. *Benefits*: When you join our team, you and your dependents will be offered coverage under our comprehensive employee benefits plan, which includes medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, and life insurance. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use.
