This position will work with students, especially those in biological sciences, other sciences, math, and health career courses, to aid comprehension and provide skills and strategies that empower students. This position will also work directly with science faculty to create study materials to improve student learning and evaluate lab procedures and program enrollment data. In addition, this position will maintain and prepare for course lab activities, order science equipment, and manage inventory in the lab. The Science Lab Assistant/Science Tutor position will work full time during the school year (fall and spring semesters) and part time during the summer. Fifty percent (50%) of the time during the school year, this position will work in the Tutoring Center to assist students in both biological sciences and other general education/developmental and program courses, including writing. This position will be located at both Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie campuses with Brooklyn Park as the home campus. This position works directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as people with disabilities, and fully supports the College’s commitment to equity and inclusion. NOTE: This position will require providing some evening tutoring sessions to accommodate our evening students, and traveling between campuses, as necessary. **PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS** 1. Perform basic lab operations including but not limited to: prepare lab activities for science courses; record keeping, monitor, order, and store supplies; maintain equipment; promote safe usage of supplies and equipment, and safe lab practices; monitor budget; maintain appearance of labs including resources, labeling and signage; develop science lab reviews and workshops for students. **Percent of Time: 45% Priority: Essential** 2. Tutor individuals or small groups of students, especially those in biological sciences, other sciences, math, and health careers courses, to aid comprehension and/or completion of science processes, text material, lecture notes, handouts and homework in general education areas, developmental coursework and program area coursework and provide skills and strategies that empower students. Meet with students, instructors, Academic Support/Access Services Director and Specialists etc. to give input on students' needs, course requirements, educational plan and goals. Provide encouragement, direction and support for students during times of academic or personal difficulty. Refer students to Academic Support/Access Services Director or HTC Counselors when appropriate. **Percent of Time: 40% Priority: Essential** 3. Prepare, monitor, and evaluate tutoring activities in the Tutoring Centers, as well as engage in professional development and training to improve knowledge and strategies to better serve students. Specific tasks include: + Assist Academic Support/Access Services Specialists and Director with Tutoring Center database management and other Tutoring Center functions as needed. + Participate in semesterly retention initiatives such as Student Progress Report and provide personalized outreach to students who are reported by faculty + Attend weekly meetings with Tutoring Center staff and directors and attend staff workshop days and other staff trainings/activities. + Expand knowledge in biological sciences, other sciences, math and health careers courses, other general or developmental education courses, and other program areas including new technologies and computer software and hardware, as required to assist students. + Upgrade strategies and techniques for working with students with various disadvantages by attending workshops and conferences as appropriate, and/or by independent research and study. + Develop tutorial strategies and supplemental materials for students with disadvantages that best serve the students' needs. + Provide input to instructors regarding new or revised instructional materials and strategies for working with students with disadvantages. + Assist students approved for alternative testing formats. + Monitor success of tutoring and evaluate and revise services if necessary. + Provide reports to Academic Support/Access Services Director and Specialists as necessary. + Keep daily and weekly schedules and update Tutoring Centers user database. + Monitor and guide peer tutors as necessary with Academic Support/Access Services Director and Specialists direction. + Maintain equipment and materials and assist with ordering supplies for the Tutoring Centers. + Preview, evaluate, select and recommend tutoring materials. **Percent of Time: 10% Priority: Secondary** 4. Collaborate with science faculty to develop new ways to meet the needs of students and serve them including evaluation of enrollment data, assess laboratory procedures, develop and promote tutoring opportunities, and create study materials to improve student learning. **Percent of Time: 5% Priority: Secondary** 5. Perform other duties as assigned to support the smooth operation of the science labs and Tutoring Centers and maintain the reputation of the organization of a viable business partner. May include participation on college committees and activities for the general good of the College or to develop community partnerships. **Percent of Time: 5% Priority: Secondary** **Salary Range:** $21.57 ($45,038) - $30.13 ($62,911) **Minimum Qualifications** + Associate or higher Degree in Biological Sciences (including biology, wildlife science, plant biology, and related fields) AND one (1) academic year of teaching/tutoring experience in Biology at the high school level or above, "preference will be given to candidates with one college physics course" OR + An equivalent combination of education and work experience + Willing to travel between campuses **Preferred Qualification** + BAIBS degree or higher in biology or related field, "preference will be given to candidates with one college physics course.” + Previous experience working in a college biology or similar science lab + Previous experience working in a chemistry lab + Training in science education theory and practice + Ability to work independently and with sensitivity to creatively tutor, engage and motivate students, especially those with disadvantages + Ability to effectively tutor science and health careers subject areas and general education/developmental courses including offered biology, chemistry, physics, math, and writing courses + Computer literacy + Knowledge of data privacy and other legal issues and relevant disability legislation + Knowledge of technical college goals and HTC's mission + Available to work varying first and second shift hours **Work Shift (Hours / Days of work)** Full time - Day Shift **Telework (Yes/No)** Yes **About** Founded in 1972, Hennepin Technical College is the largest technical college in Minnesota.
